Re: [SFD-discuss] SFD 2013 countdown
by julien forgeat
Good thing with js is that we can probably get the timezone from the
browser which makes more sense, but there would still be quite some work to
adapt the font size to each language and adapt to non-left to right
languages too

Re: [SFD-discuss] SFD 2013 countdown
by Frederic Muller - DFF
Hi and thanks for joining the explanations.
Unfortunately asking SFD teams promoters to insert JavaScript into their
web pages and select the right time zone seems a bit complicated. We
want something that is the easiest possible to insert and live little
chance for mistakes. I was actually thinking it was the same scripting
idea we tried in the past to combine the SVG and some text files to
generate the PNGs.
Now we could definitely have both options available and people chose
what works best for them (that doesn't mean I can do options number 2
though).

Re: [SFD-discuss] SFD 2013 countdown
by julien forgeat
Hello All
I think what Alexandro is suggesting is that we create a javascript that
people would insert in their webpage along with the background of the
countdown, in svg format. Then we would have a <text> in the svg that would
be left blank and whose content would be controlled by javascript using
getElementByID or something similar.

by Frederic Muller - DFF
Answers below. I remove much of the email but the idea I think is more
than 1 year old. I remember someone trying with the Inkscape scripting
like 2 years ago at least and we discussed about the issues to finally
give up. But I think it was just to automate the making of 100+ png
images. So apparently I'm still confused about your proposal.

Not sure I understood. As I said I will read the links you offered, it
will just take time.

That wasn't me. The OSM layer was added by an Italian contributor (we
asked for someone to help). No one at the SFI board at the time was able
to do the job...which is why we were using Google maps initially.
As you see we just put the pieces together (while doing was we were able
to do).
Thanks.

Well this idea is already a year old. And the ammount of effort to get
designers for each language to do the localization is far more complex than
having it on a set of variables. Is the same as trying to develop a website
statically and have people write the HTML entirely per each language.
At the end it would be around 20 lines of code, work.

iframe's suck, and I am not sure I understand why would we need an iframe.
The whole point of the proposal is to not end up with 100 images but one
single SVG and a datasource.

From my understanding you know far better Javascript than I do (I assume
you did the OpenLayer map), and XML is well... just like HTML in the end.

Re: [SFD-discuss] SFD 2013 countdown
by Frederic Muller - DFF
This looks like a lot of research on my end for the time being and I
don't specially have any issue with the current solution. While I'm not
saying we won't do it giving me links to read and "advice" will
definitely greatly reduce the chances of it happening.
Note that we're looking for something easy to implement on the user's
side. An image seems quite easy to do and has been working so far for us
and for other organizations. In fact we were able to launch the
countdown with 10 languages this year (as we didn't redo the graphics...
that's a minus) and we're already at 12.
I have been discussing with other board members and one suggested to use
an iframe. Maybe that would match your suggestion?
I hope you understand my perspective. I'm just a volunteer with limited
knowledge and a lot of things to do.
Of course if anyone is willing to spend time and showing us something
that works and that we can easily deploy please go ahead. I'll do
everything I can to support it within my abilities.
Thanks.

Re: [SFD-discuss] SFD 2013 countdown
by Alexandro Colorado
Is really very simple, Javascript has the capabilities of locating the OS
day and number so you can just have a simple script giving the ammount of
days left.
H
ere is a simple example on working the Javascript code with inkscape:
http://eclipsesource.com/blogs/2012/07/03/wireframing-inkscape-javascript/
If you read the last section, you will see where it triggers actions by
behaviours (element.style.fill = 'red'.) for te SVG style, and (
window.location='contact.svg') for the action.
And a snippet of code for the 'days left':
http://www.digioz.com/downloads/javascript/daysleft.html
Remember embeded SVG work the same way HTML could work so you can do this
serverside as well using PHP, Python or whatever get's interpret or spit
out.
If you are worried of browser incompatibilities there is a library that
takes care of that:
http://code.google.com/p/svgweb/

Re: [SFD-discuss] SFD 2013 countdown
by Frederic Muller - DFF
Thanks for your help but this looks way above my skills. Could you be
kind enough to detail how we can use the Inkscape graphics without text
and generate those 102 images with the script?
Note as well that different languages have different positioning of
things, but I guess we can have 2/3 master templates and then just ask
for translations.
Thanks.
