SFD 2012 countdown available for use and translation

Dear all, First I'm also including the sfd-discuss list as I am not sure last year countdown translators were later added to the localization list. The SFD countdown is actually ready for usage in English event though it will only start to count down from 99 days (in 7 days). We are therefore informing translators of 2011 and also people willing to add a new language that translation can start right now. All the instructions are available on the wiki at this page: http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/CountDown For those who already want to add the countdown on their page/blog/website the code is also the same as last year (we've chosen a smaller size image this year) and has the same support for time zones. So if for example you're living in Paris (GMT+2/UTC+2 that would be) then the code to add is: <a href="http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/"><img src="http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/countdown/banner1-UTC+2-en.png" border="0" width="160" height="90" alt="Celebrate SFD with us on September 15!"></a> Of course you can also run the code from your website if you want and customize it to your liking. Dear Danny, Thank you for asking questions and apologies if the call for hosts wasn't clear enough. What DFI is asking is a local team to partner with and with whom we would work on organizing the summit (before, during and after). So of course a venue is important and an introduction to the local team previous experience in running events as well as liaising with local partners and sponsors. While we do have ideas of how the summit could look like we are definitely opened to discuss 'out of the ordinary' activities. To highlight the important part of the call for sponsors we expect the proposal to cover the following points: - Why should we do it in your city/country? - Why should we do it with your team? - What venue can we expect? - What accommodations are available and at what price? - What's the plan for internet connectivity during the conference? - What support can we expect from other organizations on site? - We've also added a one day 'out of conference' tour for the team and speakers, which is a good way to get together and discover a little bit more about both your place and the people who made the summit happen. - How much should we plan for all that? From our experience with other conferences each local team will have different skill sets making it hard to be more specific on who will do what. In the meantime we are available for any type of discussion on the summit either through this mailing list like you did or by IRC. We could even set up a formal meeting if needed. So, I'm confused. Are we proposing a venue, or are we proposing what the entire sfd summit will look like? What does a good proposal look like? Call for proposals to host SFD Summit 2012

Dear all, Digital Freedom International (Aka Software Freedom International) is proud to announce it will start co-organizing Software Freedom Days under the name of SFD Summit with one local team each year starting this year, and therefore we are inviting local organizers to submit proposals to host our upcoming and first SFD Summit around September 15th 2012. The purpose of co-organizing such an event is to raise the profile of our celebrations while bringing a public space for discussions about the future of our movement. Over the past two years DFI/SFI has been through important changes in its governance such as expending community involvement through various committees, tightening our budget to remain cash positive, surveying SFD organizers and enhancing the team pack to enable teams to reuse the materials they receive, just to name a few of our efforts. It is now time to raise collaboration efficiency by getting together! While this will be the first occurrence of a SFD Summit we are still very open on the details and expect proposals to enhance our views on the matter. Our current vision is to initially organize a great local SFD bringing in international speakers and attracting both sponsors and media attention, thus boosting the reputation and influence of the selected local organizer. Furthermore an extra day or two should be planned to work on the year ahead, programs and actions which could be run under the DFI umbrella and status updates on ongoing activities such as software development, infrastructure, marketing and fund raising campaigns.
