Re: [SFD-discuss] [Marketing] the 3 DVDs from the team pack
by Pockey Lam
hi there,
This kind of discussion shouldn't be in the marketing mailing list so I
moved this discussion to sfd-discuss mailing list.
As Marcos said you don't need to register the event in order to prepare
or plan for your event. A lot of teams have already set up their wiki
page under http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2011/
Please stay tuned while the registration should be open shortly end of
this week or early next week. You may not know that the old registration
form has a lot of bugs so Fred has been working on a new script. Since
he is not a developer and he has very limited help, so let's give him
sometime to make us a Free Bug-free script for this year and the years
to come.

SFI doesn't provide any letter to any local team to call for
sponsorship. However, I have been organizing SFD events since 2007 in
China, I believe as an organizer, what you need is to prepare a
sponsorship proposal and send it to different companies and
organizations that may be interested. The proposal can include:
* Organizers introduction
* What is SFD
* Objectives of the event
* When and where
* target audiences and expected number
* activities and schedule
* potential speakers
* estimated budget with breakdown
* sponsorship options / package / benefits
* contact info
Hope it helps! All the best to your SFD event!

Dear Fred:
We are delighted and glad to hear that you like the song and appreciate
the work/effort.
Thank you too for sharing with us an important/ relevant article to
clarify copyright and non-commercial issues.? Upon reading along and
pondering we realize how NC could be restrictive and may also be not
towards culture and community building.
Let us however be regarded a little time to consider our options more
concretely and we promise to revert to you guys on a detailed and more
positive note.
Thank you very much and more power to all,
Meric

Dear Meric,
Thanks a lot for the great song! Definitely a worthy addition to our
marketing tools for team organizers.
I do have a small problem regarding the license being NC. Organizing a
SFD event means that some team will raise funds and maybe even make
money (for themselves or the organization they represent). So in that
context NC being so vague could conflict with such an event.
NC is also a lot more restrictive than GPL
Nina Paley has a good blog post related to the issue which you can read
here:
http://blog.ninapaley.com/2010/09/01/paley-vs-doctorow/
And then some more:
http://blog.ninapaley.com/2011/07/04/rantifesto/
http://blog.ninapaley.com/2010/10/20/creative-commons-branding-confusion/
With this in mind it would be really nice if you could re-license the
song under a CC-BY-SA or CC-BY
Thanks a lot for your consideration and looking forward to reading from
you soon.

2010 competition results announcement
by Frederic Muller - SFI
Software Freedom Day 2010 Best Event Competition result announcements:
Africa, Asia and Australia under the spotlights!
Hudson, New Hampshire (May 23, 2011) - Software Freedom International is
proud to announce the SFD 2010 best event competition results. Software
Freedom Day (SFD) is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source
Software (FOSS) with the goal of educating the public about the
existence and the benefits of using FOSS in education, in government, at
home and in business.
The SFD Best Event Competition is an international recognition of the
efforts made by individual organizing teams in regards to spreading the
importance of Software Freedom and reaching out to the relevant groups
of people in their area. Each year three teams are chosen and the awards
given to those teams are meant to help them further in their tasks for
the years to come.
This year, two leading organizations from the Free and Open Source
Software movements have joined us to reward those exceptional achievers:
the Free Software Foundation, the non-profit organization behind the
Free Software movement, and Makerbot, a private company pushing the
concept of Free Software to physical media and making an fully open
source 3D printer.
Among the 40 submissions we have received the three teams that came out
as outstanding organizers and promoters of Software Freedom in 2010 are
spread over 3 different continents. We would like to name in no specific
order:
* SFD team Melbourne, Australia
* SFD team Yaoundé, Cameroon team
* SFD team SPCF-CITE, Angeles City, Philippines
As a side note we are very pleased to see winners from different areas
this year, especially Africa and would also like to mention some entries
which didn't make it in the top 3 but definitely deserve to be mentioned:
* CPU & Software Freedom Network team, Manila, Philippines
* 8layes team, manila, Philippines
* Limestone Coast GLUG, Mount Gambier, Australia
* NOSK team, Lalitpur, Nepal
The above teams should be an inspiration to all SFD organizers and help
you to prepare for SFD 2011 which will happen on Saturday September 17th
this year.
About SFI - Software Freedom International is the non-profit
organization at the origin of Software Freedom Day. SFI handles
sponsorship contracts, official team registrations, sending out schwags
to teams, the annual Best SFD Event Competition and many other things.

Re: [SFD-discuss] Celebrate Software Freedom Day Song
by Frederic Muller - SFI
Dear Meric,
Thanks a lot for the great song! Definitely a worthy addition to our
marketing tools for team organizers.
I do have a small problem regarding the license being NC. Organizing a
SFD event means that some team will raise funds and maybe even make
money (for themselves or the organization they represent). So in that
context NC being so vague could conflict with such an event.
NC is also a lot more restrictive than GPL
Nina Paley has a good blog post related to the issue which you can read
here:
http://blog.ninapaley.com/2010/09/01/paley-vs-doctorow/
And then some more:
http://blog.ninapaley.com/2011/07/04/rantifesto/
http://blog.ninapaley.com/2010/10/20/creative-commons-branding-confusion/
With this in mind it would be really nice if you could re-license the
song under a CC-BY-SA or CC-BY
Thanks a lot for your consideration and looking forward to reading from
you soon.
