OK. So add a picture in your wiki page you need to: 1. log in 2. go to your wiki page (can be done either way 2 and 1 first works as well - it's just that a lot of issues come from people not being logged in.) 3. Look on the right end side of the menu bar: there is an "Actions" menu. click on it. 4. Select Attach File from the list 5. You can now upload a file (image or presentation or...) 6. Click on the Edit menu now and insert your image where you want in your page using the code [[attachment:file.ext]] where file.ext is the file name you just uploaded. 8. save (you can preview first to make sure). THIS is where we need to be getting a foothold, because in my experience people who have no previous learning on computers at all will find a Linux desktop much easier to learn than a Windows desktop. A good friend of mine has just this week registered http://digilit.org.nz/and we're planning to explore "what digital literacy means" through a series of programs on community radio, and for my part teaching complete beginners everything from the basic skills to Office applications, photo editing and beyond, using a Free OS and Free applications. This should be an interesting project.

I think I'll work on a couple right away; First video, starting with basic mouse skills, how to move the pointer, reposition the mouse (lift-move-lower), select (single click), open (double click), or drag icons around on the desktop, and ending with how to use the Applications menu. Second video will probably cover the right-click menus, how to select multiple icons / blocks of text, and how to cut/copy/paste (for files in nautilus, and text or images in a document)

My advise is to join some of them. They are all over the internet. I suggest you to check them out be a part of it and suggest your ideas. For video tutorials a great site is showmedo.com for ITcentric video tutorials. Check them out and join their community. Is smart to avoid duplication of efforts. I'm grateful for your interest. a) Shoulder surfing How about some shoulder surfing videos?... you go to youtube, trying to run that other format is problematical, and at youtube you watch people's screens as they do various things with a GNU/Linux setup. b) Grandparents How about instructive information for grandparents?... who may not have yet developed good coordination even moving a cursor around or need a reminder how to turn on the machine.

Don -- No doubt you have heard the saying "give a man a fish and he eats for a day, but teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime" (or its corollary, "give a man a fish and he eats for a day, but teach a man to fish and you'll never see him again."). While I don't have specific tutorial sites to offer -- this is where Google is your friend -- your e-mail touches on an issue that is not addressed enough in Free/Open Source Software circles, in my opinion, and where the folks organizing SFD could help. Let's not fall into the trap that users who come to GNU/Linux and FOSS are complete idiots who need to be spoonfed everything they need to know ("Step one: Turn on your computer by locating the power button and pressing it."). After all, they're smart enough to realize that they have alternatives to Windows (and MacOS), which is why they want to try GNU/Linux and *BSD, and as such their curiosity will lead them to read the tutorials that are out there. The jargon/lingo/language will be picked up in the process. While I don't have specific sites to refer to -- again, this is where Google is your friend -- I recall when I started out in Linux/FOSS four years ago that there were many tutorials -- some more difficult than others -- but the learning curve for someone with at least average intelligence (and I count myself in this category) was not steep at all, and grasping the terminology was not a hurdle. In my own experience, if one tutorial was incomprehensible (due to the level or poor writing or lack of organization), I found another that I could understand. Do some tutorials out there need to be simplified and/or better organized? Absolutely. Are the better written ones out there? Yep. What I guess would be a good start would be to get the links to the better written ones together in one place where people can get to them -- a wiki page hosted by the SFD site perhaps? It might make for a good project for the SFD folks to take on, if they're up to it, and while I can't spearhead it, I'd help work on it. A Great Day at SFD 2010

We had two tables in the 600 block of Caroline Street in old town Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA from 0900 to about 1545 (UTC−04). We talked with numerous people who'd never heard of Linux, provided them a comparison chart of proprietary applications and their FOSS counterparts, passed out OpenDisc DVDs with a list of several of the apps on it, as well as Fedora and Ubuntu live DVDs. There was a Linux laptop running a looped OpenOffice.org presentation telling of the advantages of FOSS, and a Mac PowerBook G4 running Yellow Dog Linux playing Creative Commons music in Rhythm Box; one visitor asked to turn up the volume so he could hear the music better. Several people said they'd stop by our follow-up InstallFest next Saturday, September 25th, to get Linux installed on their computers. It was a festive event and our whole group had a great time knowing this was taking place all over the world. A great day all around.
