Announcing TTCS FSWIN CD - Free Software for Windows CD available for download

by Dev Anand Teelucksingh

The Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society (TTCS) announces the availability of the TTCS FSWIN CD (http://ttcsweb.org/fswin-cd) a collection of Free Software for Windows, for download. Free Software is software that meets the Free Software Foundation's (FSF) definition : http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html ; The impetus for the TTCS FSWIN CD came from a request from someone from Free Software Foundation Europe (FSF Europe) (http://www.fsfe.org/) currently co-organising Software Freedom Day 2010 (SFD) and was looking for a Free Software for windows CD for SFD teams to use and distribute to the public. While the TTCS has a TTCS OSSWIN CD, a collection of Free and Open Source Software for Windows (http://www.ttcsweb.org/osswin-cd/) ; not all open source software meets the Free Software definition. A list of software licenses that meets the FSF's definition of Free Software and those that do not can be found at http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html Hence the creation of the TTCS FSWIN CD since nearly all of the software on the TTCS OSSWIN CD matched the FSF's definition of Free Software. What was done : - All of the licenses for all 92 programs on the TTCS OSSWIN CD were examined. A short list of programs that didn't meet the FSF definition of Free Software was determined. - For those programs, Free Software equivalents were located, documented and added to the TTCS FSWIN CD webpages. - All of the program descriptions for the TTCS OSSWIN CD was updated to mention Free Software instead of just Open Source and used to provide the web based documentation for the TTCS FSWIN CD. - webpages and program were assembled together to finalise an ISO of the TTCS FSWIN CD. Short sentences on what was done, but *lots* of hours involved :-) The result is the TTCS FSWIN CD - Free Software for Windows is available for download thanks to a mirror provided by the FSF Europe. Details about the TTCS FSWIN CD, including the download mirror can be found at http://www.ttcsweb.org/fswin-cd/ . Date created : September 8th, 2010 File name : ttcs_fswin_cd_v1.00.iso File size : 693 MB (727,220,224 bytes) MD5 checksum : 3a38ef06e56a87199122a425bac020a4 / 3a38ef06 e56a8719 9122a425 bac020a4 The TTCS will continue to maintain the TTCS OSSWIN CD, in addition to the TTCS FSWIN CD. With our experience of developing multiple versions of CDs, we are looking to develop a TTCS OSSWIN DVD and a TTCS OSSMAC CD and/or DVD in the near future. Date of SFD 2011?

by C David Rigby

Hello All, Perhaps this is too soon to ask, but we here in Singapore were a bit tardy in our planning. The result is that we were unable to reserve the National Library Building's larger, well-appointed (and most importantly) air-conditioned presentation rooms. So, can we predict accurately the date of SFD 2011? If so, I hope to reserve the rooms on Monday, 20 Sept 2010! Regards David Rigby SFDS 2010 site admin http://softwarefreedomday.sg

Hi, I'm Paulo, from Brazil :-) I have some suggestions for the future. I'm note sure with you know the event called "Festival Latinoamericano de Instalación de Software Libre (FLISoL)" (in spanish). It's very similar to SFD because It happens in many cities of Latin America in one day per year (april). But the focus is to promote "install fests" where volunteers install free softwares in computers. We can install all OS GNU/Linux or some free softwares at Windows. Like SFD, is very usually the cities have speakers to talk about something. Also, It's a free event (no costs). It's very usually the same time organise FLISOL in april and SFD in september :-) But now, we have more times at FLISOL than SFD in Brazil. Well, I like very much the FLISOL site because there is a menu with links per country. So, the master site is in spanish, but brazilians can see easily the link "Brasil" and read in portuguese. And in the Brazil page, we can see all cities where there is a time. I prefer see the times per country than all in one page like SFD. Fred told me we can help to translate the wiki. Let's try :-) Best Regards, -- Paulo Henrique de Lima Santana http://www.phls.com.br Tel. (41) 9638-1897 GNU/Linux user: 228719 GPG ID: 0443C450 .

'T'would really help to know what the argument from your opponent is. That said, why have public libraries? Shouldn't people buy books? Why have freedom of speech? (Preventing Glen Beck from opening his mouth, does have a certain appeal, but it would shut down Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert as well.) Why allow science when we have religion? Galileo and Darwin are dangerous! I would expect someone in the library business to be more in tune with the concept of both gratis and libre. And, if it's fear of the unknown, then why have computers, recordings, or anything else in a library that was not hand-transcribed by a monk with a quill? The printing press is a tool of the devil! Does the library contain any books on FOSS? Most people think it is a question of better and cheaper software. Depending on your audience, they will value several things that freedom offers: auditability, modification, access to knowledge, privacy, shareability, promotes building of knowledge colaboratively, independence from supplier, free market of goods and services, etc. -- Saludos/Greetings Quiliro Ordóñez 593(2)340 1517 / 593(9)821 8696 Even The Troops Are Waking Up <http://tinyogg.com/watch/My8SB/> ACTA – Un acuerdo que puede garantizar la crucificción de internet<http://quiliro.wordpress.com> GNU should mean "GNU's not Ubuntu!<http://quidam.cc/03-03-2010/gnu-should-mean-gnus-not-ubuntu> "Lo único que se necesita para que triunfe el mal es que los hombres de bien no hagan nada." Here is why: * We are the only team in Manchester that has expressed an interest in running a SFD event. * More, we are the only team in North West England, which has a population of 6,853,200 according to Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_West_England * We have been bringing the various interested parties in Manchester together for an event. This is much better than having separate events. The event is run like a bazaar, with stalls having different aspects of free software. People can then cross pollinate. I recommend this model to SFD teams. > o Make our community appear well coordinated to the press and visitors I recommend that the SFI concentrate their efforts into advertising the event and better preparing for next year. The number of people who are into free software yet still don't know about SFD is unbelievable. MFS and FFSUK have been doing their best to advertise SFD around the UK but it is still surprising when you tell someone who is really into free software about SFD and they say they've never heard of it. After they know about SFD then they get really into it. Next year it would be good to have: * the registration open early (rather than really late like this year) * a stable wiki (rather than the various wiki issues like this year) * better advertising, including by the Sponsors and Supporters. (rather than little and late advertising I've experienced this year even by the Sponsors and Supporters!) * a pack containing T-shirts, balloons, stickers, OpenDisc, FSF recommended distros <http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html> (rather just Ubuntu CDs like this year) Back to organising SFD 2010 in Manchester. Regards, Mike.
