That's what we did in the Manchester event. We had people demonstrating Free Software on Windows and Mac. And we handed out the OpenDisc. Hi! I agree with all your points, but still find Richard's video 'not very tailor made' to SFD. I'll prevent from quoting him but there is no acknowledgement of the people organizing SFD like you and me. Richard and SFI did in fact touch about the Steven Fry video and yes it is sad that he is now pushing something that is the opposite of what we advocate. In terms of content however Steven's message is a lot more in line with the way we want to communicate and our target audience. For what it's worth, Mark Shuttleworth also did a video this year for SFD in China and the message is about SFD and China. He talked about people celebrating and that's a good thing (I don't have any youtube link, one can see the video here though http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/BT-yVysfF1M/ ). I think a lot of team tend to forget SFD is about talking to people who don't know about Free Software, not a celebration by 'already convinced' to an 'already convinced' crowd. Our intent is to fight public ignorance. So we're not pushing GNU/Linux for everyone (try this, we'll tell you later why it's important), nor are we saying proprietary software should disappear. We're trying to explain what is Software Freedom and why it matters. People can make their own conclusion and then ask us what are there options. We're also very flexible on teams' interpretation of what should be done for that day. I hope this put my comment in perspective and that we can open the door to any community who cares about Software Freedom. Fred

Thank you for the news Fred. :-) It is an initiative to protect all previous and future development from the way Oracle is dealing with stuff since the Sun Microsystems acquisition. Tagging and planet matters

by Frederic Muller - SFI

Dear all, While you're all going through the most intense SFD moments of the year we would like to inform you that we have: 1. created a new blog feed based on blog content around Software Freedom Day and readable here: http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/sfd/blogs.html . 2. added Flickr photos based on tagging here and there on the site 3. updated the planet rules in order to get a better focus on Software Freedom. New rules are available here: http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/en/blog/142-happy-tagging and will be applied in the coming days. We hope these new measures will make the overall content on SFD website more attractive and stimulating. Please send us your new blog feeds on the discussion mailing list with a hackergotchi or a photo of yourself (we'll happily Gimp you!). Thanks a lot and Happy SFD! Fred

Dear all, I've starting to collect press coverage from various events at http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/press . Sometime it is hard for me to add non-English speaking countries as I am not always sure what it's talking about, nor which site is 'worthy of interest'. So please if you know about any press coverage about your own event, add it to the page in the proper section. Thanks a lot. Fred

OK. So add a picture in your wiki page you need to: 1. log in 2. go to your wiki page (can be done either way 2 and 1 first works as well - it's just that a lot of issues come from people not being logged in.) 3. Look on the right end side of the menu bar: there is an "Actions" menu. click on it. 4. Select Attach File from the list 5. You can now upload a file (image or presentation or...) 6. Click on the Edit menu now and insert your image where you want in your page using the code [[attachment:file.ext]] where file.ext is the file name you just uploaded. 8. save (you can preview first to make sure). For further wiki editing you can find all the syntax here: http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/HelpOnMoinWikiSyntax Let me know if you need anything else. A good friend of mine has just this week registered http://digilit.org.nz/and we're planning to explore "what digital literacy means" through a series of programs on community radio, and for my part teaching complete beginners everything from the basic skills to Office applications, photo editing and beyond, using a Free OS and Free applications. Don -- No doubt you have heard the saying "give a man a fish and he eats for a day, but teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime" (or its corollary, "give a man a fish and he eats for a day, but teach a man to fish and you'll never see him again."). While I don't have specific tutorial sites to offer -- this is where Google is your friend -- your e-mail touches on an issue that is not addressed enough in Free/Open Source Software circles, in my opinion, and where the folks organizing SFD could help. Let's not fall into the trap that users who come to GNU/Linux and FOSS are complete idiots who need to be spoonfed everything they need to know ("Step one: Turn on your computer by locating the power button and pressing it."). After all, they're smart enough to realize that they have alternatives to Windows (and MacOS), which is why they want to try GNU/Linux and *BSD, and as such their curiosity will lead them to read the tutorials that are out there. The jargon/lingo/language will be picked up in the process. While I don't have specific sites to refer to -- again, this is where Google is your friend -- I recall when I started out in Linux/FOSS four years ago that there were many tutorials -- some more difficult than others -- but the learning curve for someone with at least average intelligence (and I count myself in this category) was not steep at all, and grasping the terminology was not a hurdle. In my own experience, if one tutorial was incomprehensible (due to the level or poor writing or lack of organization), I found another that I could understand. Do some tutorials out there need to be simplified and/or better organized? Absolutely. Are the better written ones out there? Yep. What I guess would be a good start would be to get the links to the better written ones together in one place where people can get to them -- a wiki page hosted by the SFD site perhaps? It might make for a good project for the SFD folks to take on, if they're up to it, and while I can't spearhead it, I'd help work on it. A Great Day at SFD 2010

by Mark Walker

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Thought I'd pass along that the Fredericksburg Linux Users Group (FredLUG) had a very productive day promoting FOSS. We had two tables in the 600 block of Caroline Street in old town Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA from 0900 to about 1545 (UTC−04). We talked with numerous people who'd never heard of Linux, provided them a comparison chart of proprietary applications and their FOSS counterparts, passed out OpenDisc DVDs with a list of several of the apps on it, as well as Fedora and Ubuntu live DVDs. There was a Linux laptop running a looped OpenOffice.org presentation telling of the advantages of FOSS, and a Mac PowerBook G4 running Yellow Dog Linux playing Creative Commons music in Rhythm Box; one visitor asked to turn up the volume so he could hear the music better. Several people said they'd stop by our follow-up InstallFest next Saturday, September 25th, to get Linux installed on their computers. It was a festive event and our whole group had a great time knowing this was taking place all over the world. A great day all around. Where are the simplest easiest to understand instructive materials for neophytes moving to GNU/Linux ?...

Instructive info with the easiest of learning curves. Where are the simplest easiest to understand instructive materials for neophytes moving to GNU/Linux. Especially weblinks cautious about the use of jargon or explain carefully any jargon used ! For example avoiding the jargon term distros, jargon not used by consumers generally. Meaningful advocating. Advocating is a lot easier and meaningful if it includes how do I setup GNU/Linux now?...

Re: [SFD-discuss] Difficulties moving to GNU/Linux.

by Frederic Muller - SFI

Hey... well let me rephrase this for: ;-) How much do you care about your Software Freedom: do you want to let the machine/vendor control you or do you want to be in control? How much time and effort are you willing to spend to achieve freedom? I'm just kidding and there is obviously a middle ground, but it also boils down to how much you care. Besides giving up on Software Freedom has long term negative consequences. Fred ps: not sure where you took the quote from, I didn't see it on the mailing list On 09/18/2010 11:18 AM, don warner saklad wrote: >> "All these recommendations assume that you either are an old hand at this sort of thing, or that you are willing to spend some years becoming an old hand.
