wesnoth tournament

I look at the photos from all the wonderful SFD events around the globe and I am proud to have been a small part of it. However I was feeling a bit bummed about our low turnout in comparison to other places - we had 14 people. Then my wife pointed out that as Copley has a permament population of 102 people we actually got 13.725% of the population - that seems like a very respectable figure :) One of the biggest reasons I hear from people against switching to Linux is the lack of games, so we had a networked Battle for Wesnoth tournament - which the gamers *loved*. The impact was somewhat diminished when I could give them a windows copy to take home, but meh, it's still FOSS. Anyway my idea is that next year we have an international BfW tournament. Anyone out there feel they could take on the might of the Copley Crew? We can talk details when we start gearing up for next year, just thought I'd float the idea while I'm thinking about it in case I forget and someone else remembers - and to give would-be challengers time to practice :p - Noven -- --- > MageData: extreme technomancy <

SFD2007 in Bitola/Macedonia

Hello, due to the fact that the SFD in our city is on 21st of September each year (fixed), we merged the two dates, and we celebrated SFD on 22nd of September, the last weekend. It was fun! We appreciate the help that Software freedom international gave to Lugola, (the GLUG that celebrated the event in Bitola/Macedonia) and we are happy to see how many teams got organized for 15th of September to celebrate this year in the world. Our silly proposal :) would be that the next year more balloons are sent to the teams, because they make great effect on the celebration aura in the city where SFD is being celebrated, young people want balloons, babies want balloons, mothers and fathers want balloons for their children, and thus, everyone wants balloon, and people actually READ what is on the balloon :) Whatsoever, the balloons are not crucial for the message of the event, hence we had hundreds of CDs of GNU/Linux distributions, prepared a pamphlet named "Make the Move" as helping guide for migrating towards GNU/Linux and some other gifts we gave to the people in our area. SFD celebration in Nepal

Software Freedom Day 2007 Competition - entries close 30th September

Hi all, Firstly, thank you to everyone that has filled in our report form! We have about 100 replies already, and if everyone else could pleae fill in the form (even if you have posted your report by email) then that would be great! It'll help us in promoting SFD and also in getting UN recognition for the day. This is just a friendly reminder about the competition for Software Freedom Day 2007. There are two categories of prizes: 1) The best SFD event for 2007 (2 prizes) 2) The best OLPC contribution or plan for contribution (1 prize) The three prizes are, you guessed it, One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) computer systems generously donated by Google and OLPC! I don't think WRU or TVNZ will have any problem with it, it's totally fair use.

Media coverage, w00t!

Nine to Noon did a really positive piece on Software Freedom Day. It starts off sounding like "OMFG, whatever next.." but ends up being a very well-considered discussion on the merits of Free Software. I've stuck the mp3 on my website (and transcoded to ogg for those who prefer them) and linked to it from the media page. Cairo also tells me several people in her school saw Tux watching the rugby game in TV coverage, and Destiny commented that Tux was on the big screen briefly at the time. I'm trying to find someone who taped the game to confirm this.
