another possible ps2 problem with 0.8.6rc5...

Dillo 0.8.5-2.fc5 suddenly having problems as default browser under FC5

Followups set to gmane.comp.web.dillo.devel Dillo 0.8.5-2.fc5 has long been my default -- both in the preference settings for Fedora 4 and now 5, and in the preferences for Pan 0.14.2.91. It seems to've gotten some major changes lately -- possibly through a yum nightly, more likely because of some change I've made in its options, such as telling it my own colors for links visited and unvisited, etc. It worked fine with Pine (either on my own machine, or Pine on a remote machine running under ssh) in which I command "open link" -- for a while longer than in Pan. But Dillo as the default has suddenly (in the last day or so) taken to coming up with only a tiny window, and telling me "ERROR: unable to connect to remote host" in the left bottom corner. I have tried changing the preferences to something else, and back; no joy. If I open Dillo from its icon in the browser drawer on my panel, it tells me "Welcome to Dillo 0.8.5-i18n-misc" -- but rpm -q dillo says dillo-0.8.5-2.fc5. If I type or paste a URL into the location on Dillo as opened from the icon, I also get the error message. (It used to work fine on complete URLs -- ones including "http://" It failed to accept ones showing only "www.<whatever>" but would get them if I opened Dillo and typed or pasted the "www.<whatever> into it and hit enter. Now it fails both ways, with and without the full URL.) Pan still gets other browsers to find its links, if I make the change in its Edit > Preferences > Apps & Mail; Pine does if I change system preferences. Would changing color coding affect ability to browse?? The project is very well presented, i think anybody with more or less knowledge can effectively contribute. It's not a perfect replacement -- wget accepts unambiguous shorter versions of options which this one doesn't. And I think that wget accepts --load-cookies=file as well, so it can be just one argument. But current dillo usage doesn't do that. Because of that, it may be better to call this "dillowget" and adjust download*c to use that instead of wget in cases where it matters. For most people, of course, things will Just Work. dillo on the ps2

I'd never even thought about upgrading it. (just like I never thought about upgrading vi/vim even though I use it a lot until quite recently) I grabbed wget 1.10.2 and installed it, you have to compile it with gcc3. That fixed the problem with dillo (it downloads properly and displays that nice little progress bar) so it was a problem with the kit's wget being too old. Good detective work. And another plus is I'm actually logged in here with it. I appreciate the Dillo-devs work. -- robert w hall

The error log as presented without using --disable-dlgui seems mostly silent on the problem. That could be because (GNU v 1.9.1, at least) "wget --WTF?" returns success. More likely, though, in downloads.cc, child_init() returns void, so even if execvp(dl_argv[0], dl_argv) failed and returned something, we still wouldn't see it. In downloads-old.c, the return value of pclose(in_stream) is checked, so wget returning failure could generate a sane message in that case. But, as shown above, we already print the stderr output as a hint. Short version: it looks like a dillo problem to me. Since we rely on wget at run time, we should either use a run time check, or also require it at build time with a configure check. I suspect it isn't trivially resolvable, since the run time check feels complicated, and the build time check can't know what is available at run time in general.
