For reasons stated above, no one should not hope, that dillo will soon be portable, and there may exist dozens of versions, based on dozens of toolkits. This aspect of porting is still unclear. As for Dw, you should look into the archives for my last messages, and for the prototype mentioned. Finally, porting dillo to another OS, other than Unix-like, is another topic. I don't know anything about Syllable, but there will certainly be problems, when porting the networking code. Sebastian

This is looking very good. It's nice to see linuxtoday.com rendering as something other than a dog's dinner. The HTML bug report used to annoy me by generating a slew of "unexpected close tag" errors when it was clear the cause was a single missing close tag. The new parser seems to produce much more concise and appropriate error reports. I notice it now includes entries like "forcing close tag" so I guess it is smart enough to spot missing close tags? Whatever, it's a great improvement and nails one of my big grumbles with previous versions. Dillo is a fine piece of work and it's good to see it continuing to get better and better! Cheers, Jeremy

[Dillo-dev]Dillo on Cygwin

A few days ago I noticed that GTK+ and GLib are now available through the Cygwin installer, so I started reworking my directions for building Dillo on Cygwin (currently at http://www.hyperborea.org/software/dillo/cygwin.html ). I hadn't tried it since Dillo 0.7.3, so when I built 0.8.2 with the new built-in libraries, I discovered some problems with DPI. First, since Cygwin knows it's running under Windows, it appends .exe to any executable files it builds. (When you run a command in Cygwin, it will look for the file as written, then look for it with .exe added -- so the compiler is really gcc.exe but you can still run it by typing "gcc".) This includes the DPI plugins, which end up being bookmarks.dpi.exe, downloads.dpi.exe, etc. This means dpid will not find them when it looks for available plugins unless you rename them. Second, even after renaming them, I can't get any DPI plugins to actually work. Here is the output from clicking on the bookmarks button: Nav_open_url: Url=>dpi:/bm/< url_str = dpi:/bm/ Dpi_check_uds: Connection refused /tmp/kvibber-5re3lm/dpid.srs debug_msg - init_sockdir: The socket directory /tmp/kvibber-5re3lm exists and is OK dpid started Capi_dpi_conn_timeout:: try 1 main.c:153: get_command: dpid tag is NULL : main.c:326: main: get_command failed : bookmarks.dpi (v.13): accepting connections... [accept]: Software caused connection abort File permissions on the sockets look the same as they do on a Linux box (srw-------) It may just be something about the way Cygwin handles sockets. Unfortunately I have very little experience with sockets on *any* platform (and very little experience with C, for that matter) Anyway, I figure Cygwin support probably isn't a priority, but I thought I'd point out the issues in case anyone was interested in tracking them down. -- Kelson Vibber www.hyperborea.org

[Dillo-dev]Dillo on Syllable?

Good day developers! First, forgive me if anyone has already mentioned this, I just joined the list a few days ago. Perhaps some of you are familiar with a little open source OS by the name of Syllable ( http://www.syllable.org ). It's a fork of the AtheOS project, and its doing pretty well for itself. It's aimed at home users, and its goals are to be fast, and easy to use, similar (but not replicating) BeOS. One thing Syllable could use is a web browser. The native browser is based off an old 2.x khtml port and is sort of a hack. To get a full fledged browser that is easy to use, someone would need to port Gecko, or a newer khtml. Or Dillo. :o) I read that you're planning on porting to FLTK and just read the "about porting doc". Am I to understand that Dillo (or dw, rather) is already a library, separate from the GUI? How easy (forgive the question, I'm still a young grasshopper programmer) would this be to port to a Threaded C++ native widget set? Something that doesn't have GTK+ or FLTK. Hi Guys, We are preparing the dillo-0.8.3 release. Probably the most interesting feature inside of it will be the just commited "W3C + heuristics" parsing method. From the ChangeLog: <q> + * Added some 'undefined ASCII' to latin1 character conversions. + * Added the "w3c_plus_heuristics" option to dillorc. + - * Introduced a light-weight heuristic algorithm over the W3C parsing + scheme (allows for slightly better rendering: w3c_plus_heuristics=YES). </q> This is an old idea suggested by Rubén Espinoza. I merged it with the current W3C parsing, and the end result is better rendering on some sites. So now is testing time! Please get the latest code from the CVS and compare it with 0.8.2's rendering. Look at your favorite sites and see how it works for you. Feedback is very welcomed. BTW, I'm planning to add a couple of FAQ entries to explain this. What the questions and answers will be, depends on your feedback. Then look at the force_my_colors dillorc option and hook it to the menu that will pop-up from the new toolbox icon placed to the left of the bug-meter (fvwm comes with nice tiny icons to choose from). Look at the bug meter's menu for an idea of how to implement the menu. Note that the bug-meter menu also appears in the right-click over page one, so you can look at the code for the BACK button right click menu for a simpler example. Hook the menu to the left click. Start with a single menu entry. "Force my colors" in this case. A check box in the menu entry would be nice to hint the user about the current selected state. Me too! Funny as it may seem, I've been thinking of the idea for a long time. A small button near the bug meter with a toolbox icon where a bunch of handy options can be set. For instance, the one Brian suggested (force_my_colors), Fit page to window (when tables are too wide), switch parsing method, load/don't_load images, etc. Of course some of them are workarounds and some not, anyway it would help to have some of them. Why isn't the magic button there then? Our main problem is lack of developers, Sebastian and I are covered with other works we regard as higher priority, so handy task as this (and several others) keep on waiting... If somebody here wants to implement this menu button in a clean way (not as an ad-hoc hack), it'd be very welcomed. In the same spirit, if someone here has development skills and wants to contribute, please let us know.
