Hi there! Thanks Phil (Pennock) for your answer on Unix domain sockets. I kept cosidering the alternatives, and apart from the UDS idea (not feasible), the incomplete "bye" command, there's also another option! kill `ps -U <USER> | grep bm_srv12 | sed 's/^ *//g' | cut -d' ' -f1` That is, issued from dillo to force the shut down of a running bookmark server. For instance: if the user is "jcid" then a: kill `ps -U jcid | grep bm_srv12 | sed 's/^ *//g' | cut -d' ' -f1` solves the problem. Obviously, the definitive solutions need a well defined design (which I'm currently studying, BTW is a bit like JINI). The point is: Does this command work well on *BSDs, and Solaris? If that command can bring a running server down, we're done! Andreas: please give it a try. If, let's say, tomorrow I have some feedback, I'd commit a version that includes the command and 0.7.2 would be scheduled for release on Friday, so Phil B. can pack a .deb that's ready at announce time. The Dillo project is slowly entering into what can be stated as a second stage in its development cycle. We're a single step away from https, Downloads and FTP. The funding initiative also has taken a lot of my time, but its yields is what has made my continued work possible. Now I have to plan for the future: after 0.7.2 is released (with Copy&Paste), most probably the pressure for adding new features will increase (it already had internally!). Appart from that, I still have to finish the design of dpi initialization, addition, managing etc. (needed to support several dpis at the same time). Add generic patch-reviewing/correcting/integrating, answering the mailing list, keeping the web site updated and you'll have an idea of my duties. Ah, we even hold some nice patches for Linear History, Image menu popup, cache size, speedups and so on, just because we haven't got them stable or polished enough to integrate (within the limited time of our prioritized schedules). Finally I want to send a big thank and my sincere recognition to all of you who have kept following and cooperating (patches, testing, informed comments, documentation, icons, etc) with this project for all (or scattered periods) of its lifespan. For the new version, why not just have a proper "bye" command? Any distributed system needs a way to shut down cleanly. I've worked cleaning up the mess after an application system which didn't have one and the original programmer had tried to use signals, but had ended up using SIGKILL. This thing took several minutes to start up each time, losing money when it happened. Diagnosed, added shutdown stuff to the all the IDL definitions for the various components, and put together a quick tool to remove all the old state files from the working directory which had made the tool so slow. Hey presto, decent coordinated shutdown which actually worked, reliably, and startup time of a few seconds maximum (despite being written for DCE -- don't ask). I've seen a few other situations, none as severe, but my perhaps limited experience is that provided your control protocol can be trusted (nothing untrusted can send messages, eg HTTP) then every independently running part of a system needs a start-up, a reinitialise, and a shutdown command. Preferably also "dump state" and "dump statistics" commands but that's because I'm nosy (okay, I like debugging). A _really_ sick way would be to create a token, fork a child to connect to your own unix socket and write a ping command with the token as data to its connection. If you get that coming back in, it's still your socket. If you don't get it but something else replies to the child then you've lost the socket and should exit. :^) -Phil

I am not a Debian developer and as such I do not pretend to have built it in a correct way. Unix domain sockets

Hi there! This question is for Unix domain sockets savvy guys. When a server that listens on a UDS has started and its socket's filename is removed from the filesystem. Is it notified somehow, maybe with a SIGPIPE signal or something? or not? I ask because when dillo-0.7.2 is out, the old bm_srv12 MUST be removed (but it may remain sleeping in memory when the binary is updated). It'd be good to be able to remove it indirectly by making it react to an 'unlink' call on its socket (well, from this release and on). For the 0.7.1.2 bm_srv12, I'm considering `fuser -k bm_srv12` and a hackish: <dpi cmd='bye' (without the closing ">" an exit(1) is forced!) Anyone? :-) Cheers Jorge.-

When changing it, just remember that the wording is also used in the command line option (which is -f, --fullwindow) and that it has to be changed, too. I don't mind if the command line option is to be changed: there is no problem concerning Claws as the code is still in CVS and the next official version is not scheduled yet. I'd be for "Full window" or alike for subjective reasons mainly :), and also because it is not only the panel that is hidden but also the status bar (but that can be seen as part of panel, or maybe that's only an excuse :) ...). Full-screen?

Hi there, Here's a pending question: what to change "full screen on/off" tooltip for? As dillo's controls are called "panel" in dillorc (and it may be: large, medium or tiny), I'd be for something like: "Hide Panel" "Show Panel" Is it better than: "Full window on" "Full window off" ? Maybe some other wording? I'm open to suggestions. If they come quick they may appear in 0.7.2! Cheers Jorge.-

Bookmarks menu?

Whatever happened to my bookmarks menu in 0.7? I have the bookmarks button which opens the bookmarks page, but I really prefer the menu as it doesn't disturb my pages. Is there an option to turn it on somewhere? Some other way? dillo mailer ...

I am trying to make a mail plugin for dillo, and have started off looking at the bookmarks, would it be correct to assume that interface.c is the right place to start looking for getting the button into the menu ? Are there any things to look out for ? ( stumble on ). Am I correct to assume that plugins have to be compiled in as for now ? ( ie. there is no dynamically loaded plugins ? ) / Lars Segerlund.

Missing favorite features

One feature that's available in the Gecko-based browsers that I like a lot is to be able to select a link by typing the first letters of it. This enables completely "rodent-free" navigation. (In dillo I can't even find a key to go "back".) I just thought I'd check if this is on the radar. I'd also like to "me too" on the issue of connecting dillo to external applications for unknown filetypes and protocols. I don't think dillo should handle ftp, for example, or PDF. gftp and xpdf should do that. However, I think something more than "nothing" should happen when you click on something unsupported... Anyway, nice work making a light-weight browser. I use dillo a lot on my handheld, and even sometimes on my desktop machine. -- Niklas

The problem is that authentication is a part of HTTP-1.1 and Dillo uses HTTP-1.0, so it needs some more thinking to make it fit reliably. If someone here is willing to investigate the side-effects of intermixing the protocols, and how to handle it reliably (probably plus a a projection of more HTTP-1.1 extenssions), please write me back to coordinate it. As for the patch for a pop-up window with messages, I think the same as the poster who answered. The patch in the bugtrack: BUG#330: Type: misbehaviour Comments: Focus isn't set by default. URL box should get input focus initially, and after a URL is entered the main area should get focus. HTReproduce: Try to visit a page and scroll it without using the mouse. WorkedBy: nobody "... after a URL is entered the main area should get focus" Not the URL-box! (as the patch does). And as explained in the we site (New developer Info), we strive to find the root of the problem, not only workaround the symptom. Dillo-dev has hundreds of susbcribers, so I'm not the only one to complain for not answering (though it has become common that some messages remain unanswered, as everywhere). I currently got into BitTorrent and now i am thinking, if Dillo somehow supports external applications? It would be the same with ftp and alike. Why doesn't Dillo just start another app to handle this? BitTorrent is a great idea for distributing large files to a large audience, but Dillo is a little incooperative in this way.
