(Actually gtk2 should be faster as it gets more efficient) A major factor is the engine you use. I ported the pixmap "AbsoluteE" theme to gtk2 and it was slower than a snail (gdk pixbuf). However, I run the mist (etria.org-blue) engines on my gtk1 and gtk2 themes and both are incredibly quick. One factor COULD be xft, (although I think its possible, although by no means a standard practice to enable xft on gtk1) which might slow things down a bit, but personally, I would stay away from a non-antialiased browser... Porting to Windows?

I've just been wondering; Are there any future plans for porting Dillo to the Windows platform? Or is Dillo to stay on GNU/Linux? I think porting to Windows would let Dillo have a much bigger audience to speak to (since about 90% of the worlds computers run Windows). I just wondered if there were any plans? Solaris IPv6 DNS and http_proxy segfault

I just built dillo on Solaris 9 and I encountered a few issues compiling and running it. I didn't see any mention of these in the bug entries or the list archives, but I'll admit I didn't look for very long, so if any of these have already been dealt with, I apologize. Dillo won't compile on Solaris 9 (and probably earlier versions too) with IPv6 enabled. In dns.c it calls gethostbyname2() for IPv6 name resolution; this function doesn't exist in Solaris, it should use getipnodebyname() or getaddrinfo(). I edited dns.c and replaced the gethostbyname2() call with a call to getipnodebyname(). I'm particularly unsure if that's the right place for the freehostent(), or if that's necessary at all. The other issue I ran into was that Dillo will apparently segfault, at least on my system, if the http_proxy environment variable is set and contains only a hostname and port rather than a full URL. Some news...

Hi there! This has been a very busy week. I didn't anticipate how much work the dpid (dpi daemon) integration could take. Don't panic though!, the code that binds it all is running (to some extent) in my machine. The time consuming problem is that while making the integration, a lot of design matters spring in, and they take a lot of time to solve. The good news is that it all starts to shape into a more clear design (the code is still hackish at parts, but it is clear what, where and how to fix it). While working the gory details of it, I realized it'd be a good idea to make the 0.7.3 release with what we have now (plus a little bug fix we're working on with Sebastian). That way, there'll be less pressure on us while polishing the new dpid implementation, and hey!, it's been a long time since our last release. I'll keep the CVS free of the dpid code until the 0.7.3 release is done. For the meanwhile, I'll provide a tarball to the new code. (and if I can't wrap the new code before Monday, I'll provide a link to the latest dpid testing tarball I have). Cheers Jorge.-

Hello Andreas, et al, Thank you for the tip! As it turns out this was a solid lead. I was not aware that gtk-config was just a shell script, so indeed all I had to do was locate the one for the MIPS build of GTK and yeehaw: successful link! Hopefully I can get it installed and running shortly here (having lame problems connecting to the target device presently) and will have some feedback on how this lightweight browser performs on a truly lightweight platform, just as it was designed to do. Hello, all - Per Jorge's suggestion, I'm forwarding this message to the group. Perhaps someone here has already done some work on the AMD Alchemy MIPS microprocessor with the Dillo browser(?) Please see my original message below for a description of the problem I am faced with. I will pre-emptively respond with "Unfortunately, no!" to the question of whether or not I can just do the build on the MIPS machine. The reason is that that is a terribly small (poor CPU, low RAM, Flash Disk) machine incapable of supporting the development tools. My current approach is to try and trick the configure script by making it bring up a shell script that I write called "gtk-config" which I will point to in the $PATH environment variable. The output of it will respong to the three queries --cflags, --version and --libs with the responses pertinent to the MIPS target environment while at the same time being executable on the local development environment. Hopefully that'll be sufficient to get it to link everything together successfully. Would appreciate any feedback - I'll post again if the above method is met with any success. That is, new code that fixes all the lose ends in IO.c and file.c, I was able to find, about EINTR. [PATCH] new version of tab patch, fixes segfault on bookmark

Hey'all, Had a minute to spare and a wireless connection in a (very smoky... a filty habit it is indeed...) coffee shop in Cambridge/UK, so I fixed the buglet which made the tabbed version of Dillo segfault on bookmark add. I also cleaned up the code a little, moved some things around to satisfy C99, removed generated files from the patch, etc. No big functional changes (unless you call 'not crashing anymore on bookmark add' a functional change...) I uploaded a new version of the patch to the geocities page (block those popup/under/down/everywhere ads to your heart's content...): http://www.geocities.com/ikbenfrank/dillo-20030630-tabs.patch.gz 41210 bytes 4e96e122819d9d61a61a07a2cb8557e4 (as is) 27b9923f410a28224957fa40474c901a (uncompressed) I removed the old patch file, and replaced it with a note telling people to download the latest version instead. In general, I keep the patch file on the geocities site up to date, so look there (http://www.geocities.com/ikbenfrank/) for the last version before submitting bug reports to me/to the list. Also, I removed the generated files (configure, makefile.in) from the patch. So, DO NOT FORGET TO RUN ./autogen.sh after patching! The patch is against the 20030630 CVS version of Dillo. As long as there are no big changes to CVS which touch the tab patch, I will try to follow CVS releases. If this should change before the tab patch is committed, I'll keep to the last CVS release which works with the patch. selection bug

Apparently, this is because there is no selectable content in the page. a_Dw_ext_iterator_new() is returning NULL at selection.c:152 selection->link = a_Dw_ext_iterator_new (it); selection->link_char = Selection_correct_char_pos (selection->link, char_pos); selection->link_number = link; ret = TRUE; So I tried a naive quick fix: selection->link = a_Dw_ext_iterator_new (it); if( selection->link ) { selection->link_char = Selection_correct_char_pos (selection->link, char_pos); selection->link_number = link; ret = TRUE; } else ret = FALSE; This just moved the bug elsewhere because dillo then segfaulted when I clicked the image and held the button down and moved off of it. Selection_switch_link_to_selection() expects a non NULL iterator.

Dillo RPM for SuSE

Well, I managed to install SuSE 8.2 on my system. (It wasn't easy, mainly because the installer doesn't seem to be very forgiving of FTP interruptions.) I have a first try at an RPM built on SuSE with the SuSE menu structure. The main thing that's missing is the icon for the menu item. The only places I could find for icons seemed to be in either /opt/kde or /opt/gnome, and I didn't want to place it there. If anyone knows where desktop-independent menu icons should go on SuSE, please tell me! Here are the latest RPM download statistics: 283 Red Hat 9 avg 9.8/day 225 SRPM avg 7.8/day 189 Red Hat 8 avg 6.5/day 174 Red Hat 7 avg 6.0/day 32 Mandrake 9 avg 5.3/day (available for 6 days) 5 SuSE 8 avg 1.7/day (available for 3 days, not announced) The Mandrake stats may catch up with Red Hat 7 after search engines pick up the changes. text wrap aroung images?

I'm curious about why Dillo doesn't wrap text around images, but treats all images as a paragraph IYSWIM. Is this a fault in the way people are doing their html (Slashdot?!), or is it something with Dillo? Not a major issue, but it seems to be a standard thing in HTML. Sorry, I tried to wrap things up, but a lot of other things came up this week, and that's why I haven't commited anything. Judging from the past, forwarding documentations without the code is almost of no help here. A LOT OF things have been done, I just need some time to wrap it up. Yes, things will be flexible so don't try to hardcode it as bookmarks (BTW, the bookmarks plugin is now running under dpid). Hi, I'm trying to hack a mailreader dpi for dillo, and I have some code which runs on top of nmh and works decently, ( I looked at exmh :-) ). So now I wan't to know where the dpi's are heading ? Mainly if there is a plan for 'dynamic dpi configuration' and such, i.e. the ability to use a dpi bound at runtime, I have looked at the bookmarks dpi, and since parts of it is compiled into the binary ( the button binding and such ), I am wondering how to handle this in a future safe manner ? ( btw. the mail reader works something like a local webmailer, and I wanted somthing which made extensive use of comand line mail utilities which alredy exist ). My point is that you already have to review the help file in order to find all features of dillo (or any other browser). Minimalism is something I've come to appreciate, and hence being able to browse with just keyboard shortcuts and a location entry (and no buttons/dialogs) is something at least I'd prefer. IMO the inital focus of the viewport and focusing of the viewport after opening an url is not just a temporary workaround for the focus-cycle issue. When starting dillo I think the focus should be set to either the location entry or the viewport. I decided on the viewport since you may have passed dillo a URL argument, and otherwise you could easily focus the location entry with the above mentioned shortcuts (or Shift-Tab). (This is also the behaviour of mozilla and opera). Likewise, entering an URL and hitting enter you normally expect to load a page for browsing. Then I find it natural that the focus is automatically set to viewport so you can use pageup/down etc while reading (this is the approach in mozilla and opera). Dillo RPMs updated, Mandrake version available

Last night I added a Mandrake 9.1 partition and built a Dillo RPM for Mandrake. I made a few changes to put the Dillo menu item and icon in the appropriate place for Mandrake's menus. The SRPM now detects when it's being built on a Mandrake system and places menu info in /usr/lib/menu. Otherwise, it uses /etc/X11/applnk (as before). http://www.hyperborea.org/software/dillo.html I will probably be making another RPM release in the next few days, patching the splash page to point to www.dillo.org. (In the plain 0.7.2 release, it still points to the wearlab.de site.) Jorge, would it be appropriate to also use the new toolbar icons, or would you prefer I waited until the next official release? Entities &#ascii_equivalent; behavior question in dilo 0.7.2

Folks: I'm new to dillo. I have compiled version 0.7.2 on redhat v9.0. It seems to work ok. I noticed that when displaying the google home page (http://www.google.com) I get the following html source displayed for "&#ascii_equivalent" entities: Examplr: In front of "Advanced Search" I get "• Advanced Search". Question is this normal behavior? Do I have a configuration issue? Thanks in advanced... ---Ronald W. Henderson

Any interest in non-RedHat RPMs?

Right now I've got RPMs for Red Hat 7.3, 8.0, and 9.0 available at http://www.hyperborea.org/software/dillo.html . I've got my computer triple-booting into all 3 versions in order to build these. I also have a whole lot of unused space on my drive, so it would be possible to set up another partition or two to build RPMs for (an)other distribution(s). A few months ago I tried out both Red Hat 9 and Mandrake 9.1, before settling again on Red Hat - so I have the Mandrake CDs available. And assuming that SuSe has rpmbuild in their free version, I could probably download that if there was enough interest. I may also be able to get access to a Power Macintosh and experiment with something like Yellow Dog. So would anyone here be interested in additional RPMs, or do you think the SRPM is enough?
