Thank you for your detail explanation. I am still confused. Would you provide an example such as the situation of the two threads doing network job(what happens when using threads and mutexes and when using CCC chain)? Maybe it will help to understand. The CCC is not just a way of making function calls, is a theory that allows for implementing non-preemptive parallelism without threads or forks. All the networking and error control in Dillo is driven by these pseudo-threads each shaped as a dynamic CCC. There can be even hundreds of them running at the same time (depending on the page, and on how many pages are loading in the background). Each thread doing network jobs can linger for a long time (generally measured in seconds, depending on latency, network load, size of the transfer, bandwidth etc) --that explains the need for a parallel approach--, now, each one of those threads needs independent error control and recovery, and it may have several steps to perform, so it also has to keep track of its state. That's the job of the CCC. It looks like contrived complexity, for sure, but that's mainly because people don't even start to realize that it handles parallelism in a single address space. This is a bit of my fault, I created the theory while working on Dillo, but I've never had the time to write it down and present it in abstract. Priorities always stood in the way. To my relief, it has worked rock solid, flexible enough to even account for plugins, and has needed low maintenance. Beleieve it or not, when things arrive to this state, the Jargon file regards them as "Deep magic". On one hand, it is very handy not to have to enter the password every time, and on the other, stealing the proxy's password becomes quite simple (for instance, a bathroom break and it's gone! ;). [minutes thinking...] It's not a thing I'd recommend. Now, as Dillo project is explicitly concerned about security, it can't do otherwise. Perhaps you may leave that portion of code commented out, so the responsibility is left to the one that decides to enable it. I'd like to hear comments about this. [Dillo-dev]Can't start dpid

Hi, I'm not on the list, so hope this can be submitted! Kindly also reply a copy to bk(a)goosee.com I have been following Dillo for sometime, as a user, and recently upgraded to v0.8.0. Problem is, when I click on a ftp url, the message: "Error: can't start dpid daemon" So, I tried to start dpid directly on the commandline: # dpid # dpid.c:352: register_all: fatal error: -can't find the directory for dpis So, is there something missing here? -- what is dpis? I wonder whether we can call the target function directly instead of using "ccc chain", but I do not know if there is difference between these two methods ??? OK, reviewed and applied! I fixed just some minor details, except for patch-gpointer2int; although it was correct, I prefered to avoid the verbosity of GPOINTER_TO_INT and GINT_TO_POINTER casts, by also removing the need for casting back and forth from the roots! Now it looks and feels a bit cleaner, and after two days of testing it went to the CVS. Now you now guys, the CVS has plenty of cleanups, so giving it some extra testing is required. Cheers Jorge.-

Thanks to the guidance of Paul, Kelson, and Madis, I know have Dillo 0.8.0 installed and configured and it looks VERY sharp and several things have obviously been corrected, such as being able to just hit Space to move down a screenful and without having to use the mouse at all. If I encounter any difficulties I will submit a bug report. I was really serious about this: I'm one of these weirdos that doesn't like to fondle plastic rodents :-) and wonder how difficult it would be to have an option that would number all the links on a page and allow one to enter that number instead of clicking on the link. I use w3m a lot for my-1st stage surfing, and it allows me to Tab down to a link and then hit Return, but that's pretty clumsy. But, I jumped into attempting to compile 0.8.0 after reading Kelson's reply and just installing the glib-dev files then got these warnings from config: configure: WARNING: *** No libz found. Disabling PNG images *** configure: WARNING: *** No libjpeg found. Disabling jpeg images.*** So I guess I better delete the sources dir and start over again... Thanks a lot. I appreciate your patience here. I'm one of these weirdos that doesn't like to fondle plastic rodents :-) and wonder how difficult it would be to have an option that would number all the links on a page and allow one to enter that number instead of clicking on the link. I use w3m a lot for my-1st stage surfing, and it allows me to Tab down to a link and then hit Return, but that's pretty clumsy. I've only used apt-get with the CDs (which are the only entries in my /etc/apt/sources.list) Everything went fine except.... apt-get install libpng2-dev Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies: libpng2-dev: Depends: zlib1g-dev but it is not going to be installed E: Sorry, broken packages So then I did: apt-get install zlib1g-dev Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies: zlib1g-dev: Depends: zlib1g (= 1:1.1.3-18) but 1:1.1.4-1 is to be installed E: Sorry, broken packages So apparently I need zlib1g-dev_1.1.4-1.0woody0_i386.deb which matches my version of zlib1g and found it at ftp.debian.org but don't know where to go from here. Currently trying to make sense of the apt man pages :-) Tom

Been over and over the INSTALL file. Did You know that? And I've taken a look at Zen another browser, circa the same size as Dillo. Hi Everyone, I heard of dillo recently when installing Gentoo linux. I was browsing their software. I am a Big fan of small efficient tools of most any kind. Dillo has definately made a fan of me. For daily usage I generally use FireFox, but when im setting up a box on very limited resources, generally I will set things up as lightweight as possible. A Big Thank You for Dillo. One of the main points of Dillo's speed is streamed rendering. That is the ability to show the page as it is being constucted. I assume this is possible with FLTK. The way this works is by letting the parser to build the widget tree as it gets the HTML building blocks. By far, the most complex part is table rendering (because you don't know the table size in advance (i.e. each cell size). This means that cells start to resize and affect their rows and hence the table itself. OTOH, I have hopes in FLTK's internal mechanism. At this point I'm waiting for the opinion of our main dw author and developer (Sebastian). As he knows dw's design by heart, he also knows best what are the harder issues of the port, what is required and what would be easy. He's also the one to tell us beforehand if something is not possible. The initial research on the current (and soon to be available) features of FLTK that we can benefit from is done. We even consulted with some FLTK developers; there's an interesting thread in our mailing list archives. So far it looks very promising. Appart from antialising, UTF-8, more portability, smaller size, postcript output, one of the key benefits we could get is to move rendering complexity into FLTK's layout system. That could simplify a lot the current dw implementation, making it easier to maintain and develop it further.
