Hi, 2013/10/19 Frederic Muller - DFF <fred@digitalfreedomfoundation.org>
A shame most of your pictures are on Facebook as it is blocked for me, and not really promoting FOSS usage in general.
I saw many photos on your email list that were shared over Google Plus. For me using Facebook and using Google Plus is no different. PRISM scandal showed that Google has also been threatening our freedom. If I were to take a more radical decision about this, I think I would also block Google and its products. :) I don’t use Facebook personally but I have an account to make announcements. Most people use Facebook in Turkey. There are so many, so many individuals that use Facebook and don’t know about free software. Facebook is only a bridge for us to reach to the people that don’t know about free software.
Have you considered hosting them on your website?
Yes we are planning to put a gallery on our website. We had discussed this in our mailing list and volunteers that handled the website had promised to do it. You know these are voluntary work. I sent the photos to you, considering you might prepare a world report like the DFD team did. I think one should not give “harsh feedbacks” towards people in voluntary work. I think this is important in community relations. Since 2012, we have held a total of 11 events in Turkey for SFD (4 events in 2012, 7 events in 2013). In Turkey our approach is first to appreciate people for positive work and then to give negative feedbacks. This is the only way we can keep the motivation of the volunteers. I’ll send you the photos again after we upload them on our website. Best. Miss Nermin Canik

Indeed. However Google also contribute a lot to Free Software through various programs and sponsoring. Note that DFF also has a FB account on which we communicate for the reason you mention. I also happen not to use FB just like you, but am lucky enough to have Pockey take care of the FB stuff ;-) .
I don't use Facebook personally but I have an account to make announcements. Most people use Facebook in Turkey. There are so many, so many individuals that use Facebook and don't know about free software. Facebook is only a bridge for us to reach to the people that don't know about free software.
Yes, I think using it as a bridge is definitely the way to go. You could definitely consider having some pictures on FB and on your own infrastructure. Likewise long time ago we used to have a photo gallery plug in for our wiki. It turns out that after an upgrade the plugin was no longer compatible and we lost previous galleries hosted with us, and maintaining the functionality would have lead to the same issues. A shame, and there we need to rely on teams own solutions for that.
Have you considered hosting them on your website?

We actually have a competition running which i strongly encourage you to participate in. The link to participate is here: http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/cgi-bin/report.py and the rules are here: http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/en/competition
I think one should not give "harsh feedbacks" towards people in voluntary work. I think this is important in community relations.
It was not meant to be harsh and I apologize if that's the way it came out. I just felt it was important to remind our community that we are promoting Free Software and therefore should preferably use it ourselves whenever possible.

Hi Nermin Canik, cc SFD list
For me using Facebook and using Google Plus is no different.
If Fred says certain sites are better than others, give it more weight than your own opinion. Fred/ SFDI & co. do good work organising SFD internationaly, despite being partially obstructed by the great censorship wall of China. We owe them Not to make their access harder. They may not say which sites are blocked, & it will change, but if you put data on www.some-random-small-domain.tr it's far more likely he & others in censoring countries will not be blocked. Insisting on putting your SFD stuff on www.major-usa-companies-some-countries-likely-censor.com may well block access by international organisers. If you will pander to facebook addicts too, put 1 or 2 photos there with a clickable link to more at www.some-random-small-domain.tr Cheers, Julian -- Julian Stacey, BSD Unix Linux C Sys Eng Consultant, Munich http://berklix.com Interleave replies below like a play script. This is an interesting debate, please do not position it on who has the best policy when it comes to publish photo, any exposure of DFI events on media is good, we need to make ourselves shown. One other problem I would bring with Facebook is that they do face recognition on their pictures. Julien On Mon, Oct 21, 2013 at 4:13 AM, Julian H. Stacey <jhs@berklix.com> wrote:

Sorry for writing a bit late. (Every weekdays, I leave home at 7.30 am and I arrive back home at 9.30 pm for my job. I spend time for the other free software campaigns on nights/weekends.) I talked it with my designer friend at last week. He is putting a gallery on our website. I’ll send you the photos again after we upload them on our website. @Pockey: Hey Pockey, I'm very busy on this weekend but i will send email about school event's details. I promise! :) Best.

Hey thanks! G+ is also blocked where I live. I am a patient person so I don't mind waiting a bit to see the gallery on your site. Don't feel pressured at all :) I still need to go through the hundreds of raw photo our photographer took on my end... :/ so you wouldn't be the only one lagging a bit. Fred
Is there enough room on the SFD Wiki server to upload pictures and video? I've got some 17 GBytes of raw video of the Kitchener SFD talks that I'll edit down to five 45 minute segments, and probably another few hundred images. Not sure how big it'll all be when it's done, and if there's no room on SFD I can always self-host it (but I'm Canadian so my broadband is slow). Sadly, I don't think any of it will be done in time for the contest... --Bob. On 13-11-20 10:06 PM, Frederic Muller - DFF wrote:

Hi! We do have some space and could probably get more if needed, however this amount starts to become a problem when we're running backups and storing stuff "far away" as I live in China and the international bandwidth is very poor. We've also decided a while back (in 2010 I think) to avoid installing plugins on the wiki which tend to not be maintained over time. We used to have a photo gallery one, which got deprecated and killed all the teams photo galleries we had. So I'd say the wiki is ok to show a few photos to give a feeling of an event, but putting up a photo set is not going to render very well. Since we've moved to non FOSS providers such as Flickr, Picassa or whatever works for the team. I wish we could find something in the middle but as I also take care of the installation and maintenance I of course have a biased view on things. It's probably something we should work on when "we" have time, but again I have other things to do for the org which I consider more important (such as a better registration component which would allow teams to modify their data, a USB burning kiosk-kind of system, and a few other things). We currently have 50GB total and only 32GB is actually used by the VPS of which more than half is free I think. We also have a different sponsor for our Hong Kong and China related activities for the above reasons. I hope I gave you a better idea of how we're running and what could be possible. Thank you. That's a great overview! It's a bit ironic that we need to use commercial, proprietary services to display our recordings of Software Freedom Day. I did my presentation on ownCloud this year, and I hear that the next version will have a much better multimedia interface. So I'll host my own, and just provide links on the SFD Wiki. I'll let the list know when there's more stuff from SFD-Kitchener available. --Bob. BTW, I don't have permission to delete files I've uploaded to the Wiki, so there's some space that could be recovered from pictures no longer needed. Let me know if you need a list of filenames. If the licensing terms aren’t overly restrictive, I could probably host the files. Unfortunately, I cannot promise a Web player for the videos (unless these are in a suitable format for an HTML5-based one), though I could probably install some kind of a gallery on the host. (Preferrably a “static” one, such as one of [1–6].) To note is that there are also paid file hosting services, such as Rackspace “Cloud Files,” which seemed cheap enough the last time I’ve used it. Hey! Thanks a lot for your offer. I now feel ashamed of "kind of" refusing. It's just that backing up is painful (we have automatic backups but I also backup to my machine which... takes... a... huge... amount... of...time). I am sure Linode would increase our space size if we needed to and asked them. They have been very nice and helpful in the past 7/8 years we're together. I think I got scared by the 17GB Bob mentioned as we have about 350+ teams per year ;-) I know it's a raw amount and will be reduced, it just seems a bit high for what we do not being Google or Yahoo. That being said I'd be happy if we could work out a better system that what we currently have which satisfy all parties. And I still owe you one ticket... sorry for the slow response time. Fred

Another possibility to consider is archive.org. It will host video permanently and looks like it offers an embeddable player. You can see some existing examples of SFD-related video at <https://archive.org/search.php?query=subject%3A%22software%20freedom%20day%2...>. The interface for uploading and entering metadata about your file can be kind of confusing, so doing a test file first to figure it out is a good idea. Thanx for the reminder! I've used archive.org for other community events, don't know why I didn't think of it for SFD... --Bob. On 13-11-22 12:31 AM, info@wplug.org wrote:

ok, so I looked at bit... and wasted 2/3 hours watching videos from some conferences hehe. I'm glad others came back with more suggestions so I don't feel pressured. At the end I find the idea of Mediagoblin similar to getting an image plugin (well image+video now) without the risk of not being supported. I unfortunately couldn't find any API like the one we're using on our website for Flick'r, to display "the latest and greatest". Maybe I missed it so please don't hesitate to let me know... :) In the meantime if anyone has more suggestion please feel free to continue the thread. Thanks. Did we considered mediagoblin already?

Hey thanks!
G+ is also blocked where I live. I am a patient person so I don't mind waiting a bit to see the gallery on your site. Don't feel pressured at all :)
I still need to go through the hundreds of raw photo our photographer took on my end... :/ so you wouldn't be the only one lagging a bit.
I'm going to abroad tomorrow so i can't check my emails. My designer friend Umuthan can help to you for photos. Hey Pockey, school teacher contacted us on our mail list.[1] I bring sticker and posters to him. He and his students are perfect people! I'm very busy nowadays. Please forgive me. :( Best. Hi! Thanks a lot for the follow up. As you see we have since been discussing on whether we should go back to having a place on our infrastructure to host events photos and videos. This is definitely a good thing and hopefully we'll be able to move forward on the plan. Have a nice and safe trip! Fred On 11/25/2013 11:16 PM, Nermin Canik wrote:
