Hi,

2013/10/19 Frederic Muller - DFF <fred@digitalfreedomfoundation.org>

A shame most of your pictures are on Facebook as it is blocked for me, and not really promoting FOSS usage in general.

I saw many photos on your email list that were shared over Google Plus. For me using Facebook and using Google Plus is no different. PRISM scandal showed that Google has also been threatening our freedom. If I were to take a more radical decision about this, I think I would also block Google and its products. :)

Indeed. However Google also contribute a lot to Free Software through various programs and sponsoring. Note that DFF also has a FB account on which we communicate for the reason you mention. I also happen not to use FB just like you, but am lucky enough to have Pockey take care of the FB stuff ;-) .

I don’t use Facebook personally but I have an account to make announcements. Most people use Facebook in Turkey. There are so many, so many individuals that use Facebook and don’t know about free software. Facebook is only a bridge for us to reach to the people that don’t know about free software.

Yes, I think using it as a bridge is definitely the way to go. You could definitely consider having some pictures on FB and on your own infrastructure. Likewise long time ago we used to have a photo gallery plug in for our wiki. It turns out that after an upgrade the plugin was no longer compatible and we lost previous galleries hosted with us, and maintaining the functionality would have lead to the same issues. A shame, and there we need to rely on teams own solutions for that.

Have you considered hosting them on your website?

Yes we are planning to put a gallery on our website. We had discussed this in our mailing list and volunteers that handled the website had promised to do it. You know these are voluntary work. I sent the photos to you, considering you might prepare a world report like the DFD team did.
We actually have a competition running which i strongly encourage you to participate in. The link to participate is here:
http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/cgi-bin/report.py

and the rules are here: http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/en/competition

I think one should not give “harsh feedbacks” towards people in voluntary work. I think this is important in community relations.

It was not meant to be harsh and I apologize if that's the way it came out. I just felt it was important to remind our community that we are promoting Free Software and therefore should preferably use it ourselves whenever possible.

Since 2012, we have held a total of 11 events in Turkey for SFD (4 events in 2012, 7 events in 2013). In Turkey our approach is first to appreciate people for positive work and then to give negative feedbacks. This is the only way we can keep the motivation of the volunteers.

I’ll send you the photos again after we upload them on our website.
Thanks a lot, I look forward to it.

Fred

Best.
