Planning for SFD 2008 - Your ideas and input!
Hi all, The Software Freedom International team is starting planning for SFD 2008 with bigger and grander ideas! Software Freedom Day has almost doubled every year, and considering we had over 330 teams in 2007, this is an enormous goal for us all! Software Freedom Day really has become a regular yearly unifying force for taking software freedom and FOSS to the general population, and everyone one of you are contributing to that success. Thank you! Please make sure throughout the year you share your ideas and stories with the sfd-discuss mailing list so others can know about and learn from your successes. We will be releasing a report soon about the success of 2007 based on the hundreds of reports we received from teams. Thank you everyone! This report will help with media interest in SFD and also hopefully more support. As we are going through initial planning and in particular new ideas and brainstorming for 2008, I thought it would be great to invite responses from you guys, the Software Freedom Day community :) What would you like to see different in 2008? How could we better help you organise awesome events? How can we help you with marketing and such? We are a small team with limited resources and every year we do the best we can with what we have. Every year our support base and sponsorship is growing so some things we may be able to do this year, some things may be able to be planned towards in the coming years. Again, thank you all, and happy planning for SFD 2008! Cheers, Pia President Software Freedom International -- Software Freedom Day 2007 http://softwarefreedomday.org/
A recognition and mentoring program for teams, the program will aid teams to turn their ideas and projects into practice. The program could provide small grants $1,000 - $5,000. Here a list of some initiatives in: - Citizen Media. Risings Voices - Grassroot Inventors. RAMP Lemelson Foundation - Social Innovation. Ashoka Changemakers We need similar initiatives for the SFD Regards Luis G. This is a _really_ good idea! If you have some experience with this we'd love help with figuring out how we could do it. What sort of team mentoring would help? Would it be useful for teams comfortable with SFD to sign up to be mentors to teams new to the game, and places allocated on some sort of recognition program that also recognises the efforts of rocking teams? Cheers, Pia -- Software Freedom Day 2007 http://softwarefreedomday.org/
The Mount Gambier team benefited enormously by having Janet and Kim Hawtin come from Adelaide to help us for our inaugural event (500km away). They are both very experienced and so were able to provide solid advice in the lead up to the event and on the day. We were able to get them to have a look at media statements for example. It was also helpful for local media releases as we were able to say that these experienced people were coming for the event. That to me is a great example of useful mentoring. We also missed them at the Adelaide event :-)

Hi all, <quote who="Leo Arias F.">
A multilingual website would be great.
We would love to be able to achieve this, but of course will need help! Could everyone who would be interested in helping achieve this please let us know (on this list is fine, and state the language(s) you can help with so people can see what is and isn't covered). Then we can create a multi-lingual sub-committee for SFD that works with the board to ensure both the website and other announcements/information is able to be made available in something more than english! :) Cheers, Pia -- Software Freedom Day 2007 http://softwarefreedomday.org/

What I'd love to see is a set of consistent materials for the talks at events. Every year Microsoft gets all their MVPs together and works out the messages they'll be sending out for the next twelve months. Every year SFD event visitors are given inconsistent explanations of the concepts behind SFD, FOSS, GNU/Linux etc. I'm not saying we need to formalise a propoganda machine, but the success at which MS manages to get its message across should be a good indication that a consistent message is a successful one. If we had, say, a set of community developed slideshows to use during the event, and we spoke based on the points on those slideshows, we'd probably manage to educate the public much better. We've got some resources for SFD events as it is, we just don't formally have one set of notes and discussion points we're going to use for our events. Comments? The Open Source Consortium is trying to achieve a similar goal, with a specific aim to develop materials that can be used by our members to target the public/education sectors. I will approach the membership and see if the are willing for some of this work to be released into the public domain once it has been created. Sounds like a great idea! If people have talks or notes from their events in previous years that they think would be useful, please post them to the list and we'll try to collate them and put together useful materials for SFD events that can then be translated and such. This is a good idea. We had been focusing on packs for teams with posters, media release material and the like, but not actual event content! Great idea! World Software Freedom Day! Adding World to our regular SFD term would automatically suggest that it is being celebrated worldwide like World Environment Day or something like that. This would make us easier in explaining to our potential local partners/supporters/sponsors that the event is taking place globally, which would in turn, attract more supporters and of course, the media support. Perhaps it could attract the support of UN agencies as well, which the SFI is looking for for the upcoming SFD. Please correct me if I'm mistaken. This especially held true for us when we approached the apex government body for IT in Nepal, HLCIT [1] to partner with us during the last SFD. Even in their annual newsletter [2], they've mentioned it as World Software Freedom Day. The actual newsletter can be found here [3].
