What does "Software Freedom" mean?
Hi, we are still trying to understand how to translate "Software Freedom Day" to Spanish, so let me ask another question: What does "Software Freedom" mean or refer to? I understand "Free Software", I'm just not sure how that's different from "Software Freedom", and if it's the same thing, why isn't the event called "Free Software Day" then? (providing an answer to that question would help a lot with translating it properly) Thanks! Marcelo

The word "free" is a little confusing. It could for example mean "free as in free beer" or "free as in free speech" (gues wich free software is refering to ;-) In danish its much simpler. the translation of free software is: "Fri software". 'Fri' means "free as in free speech". If you look at this site: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/fs-translations.html, you will find that the translation of "free software" to spanish is: software libre -- Regards Georg Sluyterman njlug.dk, Aalborg, Denmark
Yes, it's correct. The word 'free' is a bit ambiguous in English. In Spanish on the other hand 'Libre' is 'free as in free speech' while 'Gratis' is 'free as in free beer'. The literal translation of 'Software Freedom Day' in Spanish would be 'Día de la libertad del software' but it sounds strange. I prefer to translate it as 'Día del software libre' or 'Free (as in speech) Software Day'. Cheers, 2007/7/9, Georg Sluyterman <georg@thecrew.dk>:

I think the best answer to that is here: http://softwarefreedomday.org/SoftwareFreedom Software Freedom is about trustworthy, transparent and sustainable software. It is kind of the practical outcomes of much Free Software but we wanted something broader that encapsulates what our entire community cares about. I think Software Freedom is also good because it removes the confusion (in english anyway) of free as in gratis :) Cheers, Pia -- Linux Australia http://linux.org.au/ "Beware of listening to this impostor; you are undone if you once forget that the fruits of the earth belong to us all and the earth itself to nobody." - Jean Jacques Rosseau
