Hi! The countdown is ready. In fact there was a little bug in the website javascript which added a month to the displayed countdown which is why we haven't launched it earlier. English is fully ready and all the following languages can be used right now. However someone will need to redo 00.png and 00here.png as the SFD date is written on the image file: Catalan French German Portuguese Estonian Chinese Simplified Persian Arabic Greek For Persian on top of doing those 2 image files someone who speaks the language also need to ensure the alt text on the wiki page is correct. I couldn't find the event date, so maybe it's not written at all, or maybe it's simply not readable in English. And then for the next following languages on top of the 2 image files which need to be redone, days files from today (68) onward are simply missing. If you want a countdown now you'll need to generate them so we can activate the countdown. Else usage is the same as the previous year and describe here: http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/CountDown Any question please let us know. Thanks and enjoy! Fred

last year I recommend using a simple script in Javascript and SVG. This will allow to make one simple function and deliver on every language by just having an array of dialogs. On Mon, Jul 15, 2013 at 6:45 AM, Frederic Muller - DFF < fred@digitalfreedomfoundation.org> wrote:

This is a small snippet of code with SVG and strings. Of course doing a php echo (or python print) would be enough to put a dynamic date string instead of a static text. Go to the <text> node. <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <body> <svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" version="1.1"> <defs> <filter id="test" filterUnits="objectBoundingBox" x="0" y="0" width="1.5" height="4"> <feOffset result="Off1" dx="15" dy="20" /> <feFlood style="flood-color:#ff0000;flood-opacity:0.8" /> <feComposite in2="Off1" operator="in" result="C1" /> <feOffset in="SourceGraphic" result="Off2" dx="30" dy="40" /> <feFlood style="flood-color:#ff0000;flood-opacity:0.4" /> <feComposite in2="Off2" operator="in" result="C2" /> <feMerge> <feMergeNode in="C2" /> <feMergeNode in="C1" /> <feMergeNode in="SourceGraphic" /> </feMerge> </filter> </defs> <text x="30" y="100" style="font:16px verdana bold;fill:blue;filter:url(#test)">Software Freedom Day</text> </svg> </body> </html> On Tue, Jul 16, 2013 at 12:12 AM, Pockey Lam <pockey@softwarefreedomday.org>wrote:

Thanks for your help but this looks way above my skills. Could you be kind enough to detail how we can use the Inkscape graphics without text and generate those 102 images with the script? Note as well that different languages have different positioning of things, but I guess we can have 2/3 master templates and then just ask for translations. Thanks. Is really very simple, Javascript has the capabilities of locating the OS day and number so you can just have a simple script giving the ammount of days left. H ere is a simple example on working the Javascript code with inkscape: http://eclipsesource.com/blogs/2012/07/03/wireframing-inkscape-javascript/ If you read the last section, you will see where it triggers actions by behaviours (element.style.fill = 'red'.) for te SVG style, and ( window.location='contact.svg') for the action. And a snippet of code for the 'days left': http://www.digioz.com/downloads/javascript/daysleft.html Remember embeded SVG work the same way HTML could work so you can do this serverside as well using PHP, Python or whatever get's interpret or spit out. If you are worried of browser incompatibilities there is a library that takes care of that: http://code.google.com/p/svgweb/ On Wed, Jul 17, 2013 at 12:41 AM, Frederic Muller - DFF < fred@digitalfreedomfoundation.org> wrote:

This looks like a lot of research on my end for the time being and I don't specially have any issue with the current solution. While I'm not saying we won't do it giving me links to read and "advice" will definitely greatly reduce the chances of it happening. Note that we're looking for something easy to implement on the user's side. An image seems quite easy to do and has been working so far for us and for other organizations. In fact we were able to launch the countdown with 10 languages this year (as we didn't redo the graphics... that's a minus) and we're already at 12. I have been discussing with other board members and one suggested to use an iframe. Maybe that would match your suggestion? I hope you understand my perspective. I'm just a volunteer with limited knowledge and a lot of things to do. Of course if anyone is willing to spend time and showing us something that works and that we can easily deploy please go ahead. I'll do everything I can to support it within my abilities. Thanks. Fred On 07/17/2013 04:14 PM, Alexandro Colorado wrote:

Remember embeded SVG work the same way HTML could work so you can do this serverside as well using PHP, Python or whatever get's interpret or spit out.

Well this idea is already a year old. And the ammount of effort to get designers for each language to do the localization is far more complex than having it on a set of variables. Is the same as trying to develop a website statically and have people write the HTML entirely per each language. At the end it would be around 20 lines of code, work.
I have been discussing with other board members and one suggested to use an iframe. Maybe that would match your suggestion?
iframe's suck, and I am not sure I understand why would we need an iframe. The whole point of the proposal is to not end up with 100 images but one single SVG and a datasource.
I hope you understand my perspective. I'm just a volunteer with limited knowledge and a lot of things to do.
From my understanding you know far better Javascript than I do (I assume you did the OpenLayer map), and XML is well... just like HTML in the end.

Answers below. I remove much of the email but the idea I think is more than 1 year old. I remember someone trying with the Inkscape scripting like 2 years ago at least and we discussed about the issues to finally give up. But I think it was just to automate the making of 100+ png images. So apparently I'm still confused about your proposal. On 07/18/2013 02:51 AM, Alexandro Colorado wrote:

Not sure I understood. As I said I will read the links you offered, it will just take time.
I hope you understand my perspective. I'm just a volunteer with limited knowledge and a lot of things to do.
From my understanding you know far better Javascript than I do (I assume you did the OpenLayer map), and XML is well... just like HTML in the end.
That wasn't me. The OSM layer was added by an Italian contributor (we asked for someone to help). No one at the SFI board at the time was able to do the job...which is why we were using Google maps initially. As you see we just put the pieces together (while doing was we were able to do). Thanks. Fred
Hello All I think what Alexandro is suggesting is that we create a javascript that people would insert in their webpage along with the background of the countdown, in svg format. Then we would have a <text> in the svg that would be left blank and whose content would be controlled by javascript using getElementByID or something similar. Hi and thanks for joining the explanations. Unfortunately asking SFD teams promoters to insert JavaScript into their web pages and select the right time zone seems a bit complicated. We want something that is the easiest possible to insert and live little chance for mistakes. I was actually thinking it was the same scripting idea we tried in the past to combine the SVG and some text files to generate the PNGs. Now we could definitely have both options available and people chose what works best for them (that doesn't mean I can do options number 2 though). Fred On 07/18/2013 02:32 PM, julien forgeat wrote:

Good thing with js is that we can probably get the timezone from the browser which makes more sense, but there would still be quite some work to adapt the font size to each language and adapt to non-left to right languages too Julien On Thu, Jul 18, 2013 at 2:41 PM, Frederic Muller - DFF < fred@digitalfreedomfoundation.org> wrote:

That wasn't me. The OSM layer was added by an Italian contributor (we asked for someone to help). No one at the SFI board at the time was
able
to do the job...which is why we were using Google maps initially.
As you see we just put the pieces together (while doing was we were

Hi I think Frederic still doesnt understand how SVG+JS works. Think of it as Flash+actionscript. In the end SVG is a file with script that the browser renders as graphics. Alternatively we could use Canvas, but I dont recomend it since there is very few Canvas authoring tools. Users only need to link to the SVG by doing - Embed tag - Object tag - Paste it in the HTML http://www.w3schools.com/svg/svg_inhtml.asp On Thu, Jul 18, 2013 at 2:20 AM, julien forgeat <julienforgeat@gmail.com>wrote:

Now we could definitely have both options available and people chose what works best for them (that doesn't mean I can do options number 2 though).

Hello All
I think what Alexandro is suggesting is that we create a javascript that people would insert in their webpage along with the background of the countdown, in svg format. Then we would have a <text> in the svg that would be left blank and whose content would be controlled by javascript using getElementByID or something similar.

Dear Alexandro, it's indeed a very good idea and great initiative. Actually we can run more than 1 countdown at the same time while users can pick the theme / countdown they like. Right now our banner named banner1, with the skill you have, would you please start a project to work on this ideal countdown and we can call it banner2? Please create a wiki page to start this great project, and make a how-to to show users (especially to non-technical users like myself) how to this countdown work :) I am also thinking to make another version of countdown named banner3 next year to actually not to specify the year, so once countdowns are translated we can use them again and again for the years to come. In fact we are rather busy in preparing to ship goodies, talking to partners to get attractive prizes for our sfd competition as well as updating the sfd site (as the version we are using are no longer support soon). Hence we may not have enough time to focus on the countdown for now, so we can really use some help and really appreciate your input and help! I finalize the dynamic SVG countdown first part, now it shows the days dynamically on the script. http://pastebin.mozilla.org/2658558 The point of having SVG on it, is so that we cut down time invested into this as opposed to duplicate it. Mantaining two versions I think does a duplication of efforts. SVG allow you to manipulate Server side scripting or client side scripting. So you can generate a vector graphic with content from a database like mysql, or datasource like CSV, XML or JSON object and reutilizing the localization of the website, so the PHP function can live in the same embeded SVG. Here is a screenshot of the working copy: http://zerothedragon.com/upload/images/Mozilla_Firefox_179A4418.png On 7/18/13, Pockey Lam <pockey@softwarefreedomday.org> wrote:

The whole point is to get the data from the browser, you should be able to get things like LocalTime, Language, Vendor, and such. You can script the XML the same way it's done with HTML to display a special twist to the graphic, even make it event aware (for example change colors the closer it gets to the date).

Hi! Actually we tried the Inkscape scripting as Pockey mentioned and the text was off so it was unfortunately not workable. Besides you still need the translation when the date is done... which is what we're asking for now. Now the thing may have been fixed and if you want to try please go ahead. Thanks. English is fully ready and all the following languages can be used right now. However someone will need to redo 00.png and 00here.png as the SFD date is written on the image file: Catalan French German Portuguese Estonian Chinese Simplified Persian Arabic Greek
For Persian on top of doing those 2 image files someone who speaks the language also need to ensure the alt text on the wiki page is correct.
Else usage is the same as the previous year and describe here: http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/CountDown
Any question please let us know.

Hey! I am a bit puzzled by your email as currently we only have one Portuguese version called 'pt'. +0 or -3 will only reference the same image set but from a different time perspective and therefore eventually the image from 'yesterday' at one point. To get a second variation we would need to create a pt-BR version of the same image set with text differences. I hope I was clear enough. Thanks. Fred On 07/16/2013 12:32 AM, Maicon Strey wrote:

Hey! thanks for the work. I had a quick look at it seems that all the text in Pt-Pt or Pt-Br are the same. If this is the case (I checked only 3 days:00here, 00 and 05 and might have missed something) then we don't need a special language image for Pt. All time zones are supported in the Pt images already. Then if the only difference is the ALT text in the image code we can simply have 2 version of that code made with the same graphic. Can you confirm or infirm my "findings" *cough* *cough* *didn't find a better term* ;-) Thanks. Fred

Yes, It's true. I'm note sure if 00, 00here and more.png are the same in pt. We need someone from Portugal to say for us. In these banners, the words: "Hoje" (today), "Até ano que vem" (see you on), "Prepare-se" (get ready for). Can you upload more.png from http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/CountDown/pt-br to http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/CountDown/pt I can't overwrite a file.
