This looks like a lot of research on my end for the time being and I
don't specially have any issue with the current solution. While I'm not
saying we won't do it giving me links to read and "advice" will
definitely greatly reduce the chances of it happening.

Note that we're looking for something easy to implement on the user's
side. An image seems quite easy to do and has been working so far for us
and for other organizations. In fact we were able to launch the
countdown with 10 languages this year (as we didn't redo the graphics...
that's a minus) and we're already at 12.

Well this idea is already a year old. And the ammount of effort to get designers for each language to do the localization is far more complex than having it on a set of variables. Is the same as trying to develop a website statically and have people write the HTML entirely per each language.

At the end it would be around 20 lines of code, work.

I have been discussing with other board members and one suggested to use
an iframe. Maybe that would match your suggestion?

iframe's suck, and I am not sure I understand why would we need an iframe. The whole point of the proposal is to not end up with 100 images but one single SVG and a datasource.

I hope you understand my perspective. I'm just a volunteer with limited
knowledge and a lot of things to do.

From my understanding you know far better Javascript than I do (I assume you did the OpenLayer map), and XML is well... just like HTML in the end.

Of course if anyone is willing to spend time and showing us something
that works and that we can easily deploy please go ahead. I'll do
everything I can to support it within my abilities.

I just did.

Thanks.
