Hi everyone, I am happy to see SFD is still alive. I have these points: - Lets choose one hashtag so we can find each other easier on social media. Is SFD2021 good? - Let's have an account on Mastodon (on fediverse). - Make a guideline for people to know how to celebrate SFD during the pandemic including hold an online program on ethical/FLOSS platforms. -- Regards, Mostafa Ahangarha

We already have "everything" documented. If you missed it, we have a social media #hashtag page here: https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/SocialNetworks which basically gives our different addresses and hashtags. For this year it says: "For twitter, flickr and any service using hashtags, our tag is #softwarefreedomday or #sfd(plus)year e.g. #sfd2021 for year 2021 Ok... we're still struggling to log back into Twitter because... you know what?... not really into those SN private/I still your data/but I don't tell you things. And I never tell anyone when I hurt my foot.
- Let's have an account on Mastodon (on fediverse). mmm... I'm not sure. SN comes and goes. Over the past (almost!) 20 years we've had our shares of different ones. However we would be more than happy if someone can help us and take care of what they think matters. We can discuss further, and with pleasure.
- Make a guideline for people to know how to celebrate SFD during the pandemic including hold an online program on ethical/FLOSS platforms.
So we have a start "something" here: https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/VideoConferencing and it is a work in progress. Now we are a community and this information come from Julian and lmemsm. We need to test and find out what works best for us, knowing "us" is a wi(l)de community and we don't have a one size fit all. Again... please try things and give us your feedback. It really helps. Thank you and happy preparation. Fred

Should there be such notice, and a Facebook address? Like we're trying to invite people avoid such networks, not to invite them participate in Software Freedom Day using privacy-violating networks. Needless to mention that those networks make people run nonfree JavaScript.
Ok... we're still struggling to log back into Twitter because... you know what?... not really into those SN private/I still your data/but I don't tell you things. And I never tell anyone when I hurt my foot.
What's the matter? Is there anything we can help?

Mastodon is a decentralized federated social network made by free software (licensed under AGPL) and many free software organizations like FSF and GNOME are active there. It would be wonderful if we make an account there. Postings to/from Twitter and Mastodon can be automatic using some bots/services. Also, I don't think "we had some accounts on some social networks 20 years ago" is a good excuse to avoid a popular ethical social network. In fact, we should be happy that such software and network exist and we can invite people to participate in that, instead of an unethical nonfree network.

I don't think that's what Ahangarha meant. I believe he meant something like inviting people to post that hashtag or join us fixing that bug or talk about free software and their rights with your friends kind of thing. Right. This has been a discussion in the past and we concluded it was a place to look for people who didn't know about Software Freedom, so while we really don't post much, we do inform about registration, and major messages we think matter.

Thank you, managed to get back in finally.

As I said we're a community, if someone feels like doing it we can discuss about the details and move forward.

I forgot the names... 20 years is a slight exaggeration, but a long time ago there were 2 Free (as in Freedom) Social Networks to 'replace' FB and Twitter. We had accounts in both, I actually took care of the Twitter clone until... it disappeared. So no, it's not an excuse. As I said SN come and go, and yes we do also communicate on non-free ones because that's where newcomers are. I am not the one doing it, I don't like SN and do not have any account (nor do I have anything to say every 5 minutes).

SFD is not about fixing a bug, it's about promoting and explaining (often to people not so familiar with) Free Software. If Ahangarha is looking for a potential agenda we have quite some content in the wiki. The Startup Guide is a good start, there are topics suggestions as well, together with presentations and other suggestions. Now with the pandemic (which seems to be what he asked for) we don't think face-to-face meeting is the way to go. That however doesn't change the content by itself. If we misunderstood the question, please Ahangarha let us know and we'll try to address your issue.
Happy hacking everybody.
Thank you and happy preparation! Fred

If the issue is to find a person to handle the account, I would raise my hand and do my best. We can discuss details.

Frankly I didn't understand what Ali Reza said about what I meant. So I talk about what I said. I am not thinking about in-person meetings at all. If some people feel safe to do it (like what we did in Kabul, Afghanistan last year) that is fine. But that is up to them and their conditions. We won't encourage that for sure. Health is far more important than conducting such programs. I think we need to motivate people to use online solutions creatively. We can help them by listing ethically FLOSSy options (jitsi, BBB, Mumble, icecat,...). We can even approach some FLOSS organizations and ask them to provide some little infrastructure for a week or 2-3 days and let registered events on SFD website to hold their program on. I am sure it worth trying with some organizations like FSF, FSFE, FramaSoft,... As you mentioned, we can have a list of suggested topics (not as agenda, but as some curated list for those who are out of option. at least as a starting point) **** Regarding SN, I emphasis again that I don't advocate absence on popular ones. I only mean SFD should be in forefront of promoting migration to ethical FLOSSy platforms. People should know SFD's main account is on an ethical platform while exploiting others to spread the words. FSF does the same. their twitter account just cross-posts what they share on their main account (used to be GnuSocial and now is Mastodon). Using some tools like moa.party, we can cross-post from Mastodon to twitter (which is what I do). **** There is also another point I want to share here and avoid sending it as another email: one slide is talking about 2017. Please update that. If you want I can share photo of SFD in Kabul university last year. -- Regards, Mostafa Ahangarha

Totally agree with you, so great! We are planning to do exactly what you are referring to regarding online solutions, and while there is a long list of topics here: https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/Resources the page can probably be updated. Now there was a bug in the slider module on the website, blocking us from editing the slider... was fixed earlier today :-) You didn't check again did you? And yes please email us a few photos directly (or give us a link), we'll be happy to update the ones we have. Thank you. Fred

I should look for the original photo but I could find this one on twitter. Information: SFD 2021 - Kabul University, Kabul, Afghanistan -- Regards, Mostafa Ahangarha

Fair enough.

I remember a few too but everything come and go, that shouldn't be a reason to avoid things.

I just made an example, that was what I understood. I know what SFD is, I've participated in some, that was just an example for how people may be interested in the ways of participating, not that we should do that explicitly. -- Ali Reza Hayati (https://alirezahayati.com) Free culture activist and privacy advocate

I forgot to say I am happy that all of us are alive :D. We all passed a horrible year. Thanks for links you shared with me regarding social media and hashtags. Regarding the fact that Mastodon is getting more and more popularity and is already very much settled as the main FLOSS social media for many individuals and organizations (including FSFE and FSF) I think we need to consider it seriously. SFD should be be an example for others on how to opt ethical social platforms and start migration gradually. I think I shared this last year as well that we in Iran tried to introduce Mastodon (and in general Fediverse) to participants in 2019. We asked people to make account on different instances and share their comments about the program and then read them between each presentation. It was very good and I think very successful. I am not advocating to use only Mastodon and leave twitter (or other platforms). I am simply requesting to consider Mastodon as the primary account or at least one of them. We can discuss about the possible challenges.
We need to test and find out what works best for us, knowing "us" is a wi(l)de community and we don't have a one size fit all.
Sure. And I am not thinking about one solution for everyone. We can just suggest the possible option to hold SFD without compromising. I will try to share my thoughts on the relevant wiki page. -- Regards, Mostafa Ahangarha
