Re: [SFD-discuss] [SFD-announce] Sponsorship confirmed and testing ahead

Dear SFD supporters,
Dear Frederic,
We've been graciously granted a VPS by Linode (www.linode.com) to host our platform, which has been scattered here and there so far. Until now Canonical was providing the support for our web platform, but technical details have been preventing us from upgrading a 3 years old wiki in dear need of a lifting!
So I extend my thanks to both Canonical who have been supporting us since the early days and has just renewed their commitment to SFD in 2010, and to Linode with whom we have slow migrated stuff over time. Both companies have been extremely responsive to our needs and it's a real pleasure dealing with them.
This also means we'll still be getting loads of free Ubuntu CDs shipped to each teams again this year, and that we'll be migrating our sites and various services over the coming days. We might definitely experience some outage (or maybe not). One thing which has been giving us headaches so far was our mailing lists and we're planning to phase them out in the short term, except from announcements.
We're also looking for volunteers to help us add an Free Software alternative to Google Maps and provide access to OpenStreetMaps. If anyone has experience implementing an API similar to what we have so far (http://cgi.softwarefreedomday.org/2009/map.shtml ), please do contact us.
That will be all for now and we hope you're starting to get ready for this year SFD.
Thank you all.
Warm regards,
Frederic Muller SFI President Software Freedom Day 2010 happening on Saturday September 18th, 2010
The announcements are terrific. I, alongwith all the other SFD supporters would be looking forward to what new you and your team of developers/volunteers do bring to the table. One of the things I would be looking for a. An openid single-on sign on to wiki :- This would make it easier for both me as well as people at the other end of the stream (Sponsors and other contributors) to know the history of persons and teams. As I am and have been working with different teams it makes sense to be able to compile all my activity at one username. b. Tagging :- This should also make it easy for people to find content. c. Filtering through cities :- Right now its pretty hard to get a good filter and contact details of SFD contributors based in other cities/countries. As I usually am on the move every few months I would like to meet and talk with other SFD contributors as well. Right now, that's a hard task in the existing way. I'm sorry if I've not been able to articulate my need (features) but do look forward to the new wiki. Is there a time-line when the new wiki and other things are in place? September is just 3 months away and packing and sending schwag does take quite a bit of time (previous years experiences ). Also posted the same about the site revamp announcement on the blog. http://wp.me/pfuZu-eQ I do hope you also think of having the mailing list and its archives also put up on the main page of the new site.

What do you mean with that? You can add keywords to every page. And the wiki supports categories as well.

As said before looking forward to it. A bit curious though would you be using something like mediawiki or something else http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wiki_software

Lemme take examples for you. http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/Competition2009 http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/press http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/archives http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/archives/2008 http://sfd.openfreeway.org/index.php?cPath=5 (shouldn't the store be part of the site? curious) http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/archives/2008/asia (this page does not exist ? ) anyways, all the above pages there are no keywords. If there are other wiki pages which have keywords/tags somewhere and I have not been able to see them please link them so I know where and what I should be looking for? Preferably a tag-cloud but if not that atleast a way for us to figure out thing. Just as an e.g. http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com/tag/rpg/ makes it easy for me as well as for others to figure out stuff (if they are looking for )
c. Filtering through cities :- Right now its pretty hard to get a good filter and contact details of SFD contributors based in other cities/countries.

Sure that's what we are looking for as well.

I looked up the SFD website today to see if I could sign up a local team but discovered there's not much 2010 info there yet. Then I noticed this discussion on the list and thought I'd join it. With SFD closing in fast, my preference is to get any wiki online as soon as possible. I'd be happy with MediaWiki or DokuWiki or really any wiki software. I've never found tag clouds useful and they really seem intended for blogs rather than wikis. I'm not opposed to a tag cloud but given the short amount of time until SFD, I'd prefer to get something useful online now and work on the eye-candy later. -Steve

Dear Steve, The wiki is already up at wiki.softwarefreedomday.org and you can start entering information about your team and the event you're preparing. The static pages describing SFD should be up within a few days as well as the registration script which link to the map and allows to get goodies for early registration. We've been struggling with IT but hopefully this is going to be over very soon. Thanks a lot for your feedback and don't hesitate to ask us if you need more information. Fred
Btw, all attached documents (like ODT, PDF, Word) should now be searchable inside via xapian (http://xapian.org/) regards, Thilo

Documents and document formats address data, not software (e.g. xapian). http://www.apdip.net/publications/fosseprimers/foss-openstds-withcover.pdf http://www.sutor.com/c/essays/osvsos/ When bringing attention to Software Freedom, it helps that open formats are used when promoting software freedom. The message does refer to attached documents, two of which (ODT {sic} and PDF ) are open. In the case of text, ASCII, UTF-8, XHTML, DocBook, ODF, and PDF/A are open formats. When accepting documents for indexing by a SFD project or sub-project, open formats help Freedom, closed formats hurt Freedom. Regards, /Lars
Well it is up to the user what they will upload. I dont see us removing documents which are not open standards. That would hurt freedom even more. Regards, Thilo

Hi, I created an account on the new wiki but haven't had any luck entering any information. I understand the event registration form won't be online for a while but I was hoping to manually create a page for our local event. I did a search for USA and found two existing pages: http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2010/NorthAmerica/USA http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2010/NorthAmerica/USA/NY My event is in Dallas, Texas, so I assume I need to create a page called: http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2010/NorthAmerica/USA/TX/Dallas however, my attempt to do this resulted in this error message: "You are not allowed to edit this page." I thought maybe this was because having a user account wasn't enough to get me write access, so I tried to create a profile page for my account. But when I click the links that says "Create my home page now!" I get the same error: "You are not allowed to edit this page." So there appears to be a permissions problem of some kind that's preventing wiki users from editing the wiki or creating pages. -Steve

Hi Steve, you were right. The access restriction of NorthAmerica were too strict. The general idea so far was to just have 2010/NorthAmerica/USA/Dallas - but I can see that this is not that well suited for the USA. So I will insert a state form, too. Come back in 10 minutes. Regards, Thilo
