Software Freedom Day 2025
With Document Freedom Day 2025 and Hardware Freedom Day 2025 officially over, we're gearing up for Software Freedom Day 2025 on September 20th. Mouse over the Software Freedom Day item in the top menu and select Events from the drop down. Thought we could brainstorm ideas about where to find help if you're planning to organize a Software Freedom Day event this year. It's great to have a local group or team to work with. Not all of us do. If the thought of doing it all alone is holding you back, here are some possible ideas on where to find other participants. Members of Ubuntu LoCo teams have spoken to some of the DFF members about the possibility of working together to revitalize local teams and celebrate SFD2025 together. If you'd like to check if there's an active Ubuntu LoCo team in your area or would like to help revitalize one, the most recommended contact method seems to be through their Discourse site: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/c/locos/129 The Free Software Foundation is trying to put together LibreLocal meetups to honor the FSF's 40th anniversary. This might be a great opportunity for a joint FSF and SFD celebration. The FSF and LibrePlanet have a page about it here: https://libreplanet.org/wiki/FSF40/meetups They can also help connect you with groups in your area or help publicize if you want to start one. I spoke to some members of the Open Foods Facts project ( https://blog.openfoodfacts.org/en/ ). Members of their organization live all over the world and some offer to do guest talks at their local FOSS events. See their web site for contact information. They also have a Slack community: https://slack.openfoodfacts.org/ and monthly virtual meetings online. LibreOffice has local groups. Some of them joined us to celebrate Document Freedom Day 2025. There's always a chance they may have a group in your area. Do you have a local Linux group, Users group, MakerSpace or other organization in your area that might be interested in volunteering to help with Software Freedom Day? You can find many groups listed on Mastodon, Get Together, Mobilizon, EventBrite, Meetup, Facebook, Discord, Slack, etc. Know of other resources for locating people interested in FLOSS who may want to volunteer to help out with a Software Freedom Day event?
