Mastodon is a decentralized federated social network made by free software (licensed under AGPL) and many free software organizations like FSF and GNOME are active there. It would be wonderful if we make an account there. Postings to/from Twitter and Mastodon can be automatic using some bots/services.
I just joined Mastodon. I posted about Software Freedom Day and registration being open for 2021 using #SoftwareFreedomDay and #SFD as hashtags. Not much traffic on Mastodon for Software Freedom Day. Would be nice to get some talk going over there. Maybe others would notice. Wondering if we should add some more common search hashtags like FLOSS or software as well so people on Mastodon not searching for Software Freedom Day may find it too. The link on https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/SocialNetworks for the Federated StatusNet group appears to be down.
So to summarize: pick the date that works for your community, and make sure it's very clear on your wiki page and communication channels.
I think that's a great way to go. Better to do something than nothing at all. Had to move the date last year. Still had a nice, enjoyable event online even if it was small. Also found out last year that it's very important to indicate what time zone you're in. People tend to assume you're in the same time zone as them which may not be true if an event is virtual. Please share your account and link to the post you have made. Mastodon functions different from other popular and centeralised social platform. If you have account on some instance which is new or doesn't have much interaction with other instances, it is possible that others cannot find you and your post immediately. So let us know the address to the post and to your account so we (at least I) can follow. I have already shared about registration here: https://fosstodon.org/@fossasap/106493941033398470 I have also shared in Persian. We can work on it. We still have plenty of time. -- Regards, Mostafa Ahangarha

Indeed, "This StatusNet instance is no longer available". Like I said before and it is not an excuse, maybe a reason though, we are not into Social Network so much and when we did, the "Free" one we used disappeared one by one. Using them (from my point of view) was already a pain, doing it again takes even more efforts. Now we're discussing how to best take the next step and somewhat "be there, and be heard". Thank you all for your feedback. Fred
Hi SDF folks! I must apologize for the loss of the SDF social media account on StatusNet -- that was on my server, and although the messages to and from the SDF group propagated throughout the Fediverse, the administration of the group did not. I retired that StatusNet server because it was installed without SSL, and was running an obsolete version of StatusNet that couldn't (easily) be upgraded. I did send several messages to all the groups (over 100 groups!) that were hosted on the server, but very few people responded, and so far I think SDF is the only organization that's noticed :-) Sadly, I now have no up-to-date instance of StatusNet or GNUsocial; my GNUsocial instance at https://gs.jonkman.ca supports only the OStatus protocol, but not ActivityPub as a modern instance should. That means it cannot communicate with Mastodon, now the dominant software in the Fediverse, because Mastodon dropped OStatus support a few years ago. If SDF needs another account in the Fediverse I recommend the DFF sets up its own server for all the different programs (Hardware Freedom Day, Education Freedom Day, &c.) Again, my apologies for not being able to maintain that server... --Bob. On 2021-06-30 5:29 a.m., Frederic Muller - DFF wrote:

Hi Bob! No problem at all. As you may have guessed we're not so much into social networks and we really don't feel as it being an issue. We just opened a new account on Mastodon and are currently lurking to see what's happening there. So all is fine and in order now. Thank you for your past and current support. Fred
