That looks like a really cool event, even the police seemed to have showed up https://plus.google.com/photos/116893325733822534829/albums/5931398478136841489/5931398543403754466?pid=5931398543403754466&oid=116893325733822534829 Definitely a good way to get "anyone" and most likely people who are not familiar with FOSS. I remember trying to do that a while back but we couldn't manage to get an authorization and malls would charge us to "be there". So congrats for a job well done! It was good, but I signed up a little late, which may have affected our physical position. (Far down the street, where there was less foot traffic) We got to talk to a lot of people, and give out quite a lot of software. It seems that with our signage, people still didn't understand that the software was free, some came up and asked "So what are you guys selling?" Had to explain the free vs. libre type issues to some. But it was overall a great little event. Next year I'd like to get in on the correct day if possible. The week after was OK, but the location was perfect for me personally, that's why we did it that weekend. Thanks for the kudos. Hopefully we'll get organized a little earlier next year, and put on a little more for the production. (I'd like to be able to do a few small lectures or tutorials, but that will depend on the venue)

Oh, and one other thing, as well as giving out copies of various Linux distros, I think that it is crucial to have something for Windows and Mac users. We had burned copies of Valo-CD since TheOpenDisc was more than a year out of date. Valo seems to be going USB-drive only, however. We can manage to burn several dozen copies of CD (or DVDs) to give away, but I don't see it being feasible to buy USB sticks for all potential walk-up interested parties. Hopefully we can continue to have those giveaways for people, it seems to be one of our strongest tools.
Indeed, the cost of USB sticks is way higher to be worth thinking of replacing CDs/DVDs with those. We've also thought of getting a USB maker sponsor but at the end (even if we had found one) it would have been a lot better for our actions to get the equivalent cost and invest it in our activities rather than 300 to 500 hundred USB sticks (which still wouldn't allow teams to redistribute them regardless). In fact earlier on the list we were discussing on making a USB burning machine to allow people to come with their own sticks and get the software they want, be it a GNU/Linux distribution or a Windows FOSS disc. We feel that DVDs are a bit medium of the past, new laptops seldom have a drive by default, and everyone seems to walk around with USB sticks. Maybe in your case of setups CDs/DVDs still work best though. Or are we wrong to think every one has a stick with him/her? Thanks for the feedback as this is really useful. For all SFD exhibitors willing to set up in a shopping precinct/ mall, There's shops who could sell individual visitors a stick. That would encourage every shop that sells stick to support an application from an SFD group, for a free stand space in the mall. SFD exhibitors would approach shop owners in advance & tell them that each shop selling sticks & supporting the application would get a coloured dot on a map taped to the SFD table for visitors to see. Shopping mall owners wanting to increase visitor numbers would be keen. Visitors would get told: If you have a _completely_empty_ stick at least X gig, we can copy it now. If you don't have a stick, buy from any shop with a coloured dot on map, & come back in a few minutes. ( That gets rid of random wasters & scroungers who would hang around, distract &/or waste exhibitors time & pick up free media & not use it.) It would not help those (like our previous Munich SFDs) not near shops selling USB sticks, eg in an office block, technical college etc. Cheers, Julian -- Julian Stacey, BSD Unix Linux C Sys Eng Consultant, Munich http://berklix.com Reply below not above, like a play script.
