Hi, I like to bring this idea up even as I of today not even know if we would be able to participate: Think of that you will be able to have webcams on every continent on many places - most interestingly link places in the same time zone or at least with some overlapping - visitors can walk by and wave each other like Europa<->Australia or USA<->Brazil - one also might include some sound. Maybe we can at least think of a good software solution to do that. I think this could be fun and also intersting and only be able because this is an event which happens on many places. It could eben show what you can do with free software and also show how far the ideas are reaching. I was thinking about if VLC would be a good solution and how to decide who links to whom. I think one way would be to make a wiki page where groups could list when they plan to have a webcam online and then we can sort the cams by time and not by country /continent. It would also be possible to dedicate more than oen computer on a location as a link station and just put a sign with the city name besides the screen. It could maybe also help people to get to know each other - lets say you have two schools and maybe those two schools get a link they could even reactivate evcery now and then. Personally I havent done much in video conferencing but wanted to share this idea so that you could think about it and maybe this could be one thing which could be grown as a part of next years SFD. And it wouldn't be something each group only does for themselves but really do a worldwide link. hello, We already did a similar videocon for two sites last year here in manila, philippines. We were able to connect to SFD celebration in Vietnam and Davao (southern province of the country.) This year we will be streaming from one main venue and other sites will be viewing the sessions... if you are able to set-up, we will say hi/hello during the event.. :-) ow we have timezone differences .. :-0 Rick On Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 6:53 PM, Thilo Pfennig <tp@pfennigsolutions.de>wrote:

What software did you use? I suggest we define some common standards and settings to make it easy to connect to each other. Maybe as simple as we can set it up with just one click on a link. I would start here using the same software setup you used - no need to get creative if this causes incompatibility. I have created a page in the wiki to document it: http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/VideoConferencing Regards and greetings to Manila! ;-) Thilo -- Thilo Pfennig - PfennigSolutions IT-Beratung- Wiki-Systeme Sandkrug 28 - 24143 Kiel (Germany) http://www.pfennigsolutions.de/ XING: https://www.xing.com/profile/Thilo_Pfennig - LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/tpfennig

I, for one, welcome our new videoconferencing overlords. ;) Seriously, though, here in Warsaw we are going to set-up live video/audio streaming of our event, so I will gladly here some suggestions as to the best/most compatible with other SFD events way of doing this. This issue is on our schedule in the beginning of September.
I have created a page in the wiki to document it:
W00t! Great, I'll be on the look out, then, thanks! Cheers Mike "rysiek" Woźniak
ow... unfortunately, last year we used the videocon facility of the venue. For this year, we are streaming (without interaction) using another facility of a TV network here. But for the interaction we will be using skype. Not really an elegant (pure) foss but way simpler to set-up. Any other suggestion on the tool we can use? Ah no, Skype is really the opposit of FOSS. I dont have much experience. I have used Ekiga a bit without video. It could be a solution. I suggest we use something that comes with Ubuntu and has a simple setup. We should have enough time to find a nice software. Client: QuteCom (previously known as WengoPhone/OpenWengo). It's FOSS, it supports standard SIP/SIMPLE, it supposrts Jabber/XMPP, it supports multiple accounts, it's cross-platform. Server: Asterisk. FOSS, SIP, etc. Gets the job done. Cheers mike
