As part of my preparations to the oncoming Software Freedom Day celebration here, at Altai State University (Barnaul, Altai Krai, Russia), I've prepared a leaflet, which could be called ``an A to Y of Free Software'', to be used as a give-away stuff, primarily targetted at newcomers. The leaflet contains a list of 25 Free Software products (for each of the English alphabet letters, excluding Z), each accompanied by an URL and a short annotation given in Russian, sometimes a bit humorous. The selection of the packages is rather arbitrary. I'd appreciate any comments, especially from the Russian language-speaking Free Software users, as I'm not yet sure about wording, typos, etc. I'd be especially glad to see any variants covering completely distinct sets of Free Software packages. http://waterlily.ip.uusia.org/~ivan/doc-files/a-y-freesoftware-2009/a-y-free... http://waterlily.ip.uusia.org/~ivan/doc-files/a-y-freesoftware-2009/a-y-free... -- FSF associate member #7257
reminds me of http://www.joke-archives.com/computers/abcsunix.html "Z is for zcat, which handles compression" -- where I took my nickname from ;) 2009/9/13 Ivan Shmakov <ivan@main.uusia.org>:

The selection of the packages is rather arbitrary. It seems that I should've stated my intents behind such a leaflet. The idea is not to supply the reader with a comprehensive set of facts regarding the selected packages, nor it's to supply the reader with bare essentials -- being constrained to a few lines of text, one can't probably do either. The sources of the information regarding each of the packages should be the respective homepages, links to which are given. (There's hope that WWW will be accessible on the event, should we get a display room and some luck.) IS> I'd appreciate any comments, especially from the Russian IS> language-speaking Free Software users, ... As to our friends from Saratov (also Russia): could the comments regarding my work be posted to a mailing list, or into an NNTP-accessible newsgroup, please? (Preferrably one that I'm subscribed to.) It seems that I'm just too used to my Lynx browser to use anything else unless for a very good reason (such as checking my bank account), and, unfortunately, Google Groups aren't Lynx-friendly when it comes to posting a reply. FWIW, there's a mailing list primarily created to coordinate the preparations to the local celebrations (in Russian): https://theory.asu.ru/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/softwarefreedomday-2009 If anything else fails, feel free to send comments to my e-mail directly. There're going to be a few seasoned Free Software users over the place, and the data is being collected on who may share its experiences about which software in informal talks, showing the examples, or helping to solve particular tasks with the tools being presented (should some unoccupied computers be available at a time.) These people would easily be able to provide the ones who'd become interested (or curious) about a software package with all the necessary information. With regards to the purpose, the worst entry in this list is probably the one about Freeciv: the place will be available to the participants for 3 hours at most, and it'd clearly be not enough for anyone to really see this wonderful game in action. FWIW, I've also translated a GRASS flyer into Russian: http://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/grass-user/2009-September/052311.html ... and a colleague of mine have prepared a tiny description of the Beamer LaTeX class, too: http://theory.asu.ru/pipermail/softwarefreedomday-2009/2009-September/000013... -- FSF associate member #7257
