report on SFD in Dallas, Texas
We had a good Software Freedom Day event in Dallas, Texas this year. The event was hosted by Dallas Makerspace, a local hackerspace. We did not get an exact count for attendance. Estimates varied from 50 to 75 people. We had representatives from Fedora to demonstrate GNU/Linux and give away Fedora T-shirts and CDs. Representatives from CircuitCo demonstrated the BeagleBoard and Intel Minnow free hardware boards running GNU/Linux. We had lots of swag from SFD, FSF, and Creative Commons. (For some reason the EFF did not respond to our requests this year, so no EFF swag). We grilled hot dogs and hamburgers for our guests. We had talks on Drupal, Blender, Civic Hacking, GNU/Linux security and privacy, Libre Office, and other topics. I took a few photos with my mobile phone: http://flickr.com/photos/steevithak/sets/72157635746080145/ You can read more about the event on our web page: https://dallasmakerspace.org/wiki/Software_Freedom_Day_2013 -Steve
Here's a quick recap of our two Tasmanian events for anybody who might be interested in hearing! Attitude kicked off the morning in an interview with Chris Wisbey for ABC Statewide Mornings, talking about the history behind Software Freedom Day and some of the philosophies that the Free/Open Source Software movement is based on. Our first trial of the Launceston Bowls Club as a venue for SFD Launceston was a success, with such attractions as a virtual graffiti wall and SuperTuxKart arcade cabinet brought by Garry, some lovely Gimp painting demonstration by Mim and the ever popular Oculus Rift being used to show off OpenHMD support in Neverball. Hobart's return to Software Freedom Day was a success as well, with a crowd of Free Software enthusiasts and TasLUG regulars chatting and hacking on exciting projects. faulteh worked on Owncloud, ruagair worked on E17, tserong hacked on his Gumstix Overo board and I hear there was procedural jazz as well! In Launceston we didn't quite have as much advertising as previous years and only managed to get about 30 people through. In Hobart, they had a few people through as well, mostly thanks to the radio interview. http://www.taslug.org.au/modules/news/article.php?storyid=222 Cheese
Hey guys! Thanks for the reports (I mean both from Tasmania and from Dallas). We would love to make those a bit more public and if you do have a regular blog talking about FOSS in general we will happily had you to the SFD planet. Besides we have launched the SFD competition offering 2 XO-1 which we are getting from OLPC Australia. Again the purpose is to talk about what happened and how our efforts were perceived. So thanks a lot and please let me know if I can add you to the existing feeds. Thanks. Fred
We've got a feed for TasLUG news posts, but it's mostly just meeting announcements. We're more than happy for our SFD recap to be shared though http://www.taslug.org.au/modules/news/article.php?storyid=222 I also have a feed for my own site where I've written about F/OSS projects and interviewed developers, but I also write about non-free stuff, so it's possibly less appropriate. Most recently is probably the interview I did with contributors to the F/OSS Desura client http://cheesetalks.twolofbees.com/desurium.php I completely forgot about the competition. I'll look at submitting something about the Tasmanian SFD events! Cheese On Tue, 2013-09-24 at 23:17 +0800, Frederic Muller - DFF wrote:

Hi again, Sorry for being a bit late on this one. I've been trying to find the non-free stuff and it seems to be about GNU/Linux stuff regardless, is that correct? Would it be possible to add a "free" (or similar) tag to the posts talking about Free Software? I also need to find a hackergotchi, which is easy for the TASLUG but I was wondering for your blog? Thanks. Fred On 27/09/13 13:00, Cheeseness (Josh Bush) wrote:
