Hi all, While its great that we are having a software freedom day, but I believe that free software is just the beginning of the wakeup call . There is so much more that needs to be done. There is also the whole of Free Culture movement as well which has lots of similarities and dis-similarities to what free software hopes to do. As an individual I believe the free software movement and the free culture movement have much to gain and I'm sure there would be lot of loose relationships which are there or may be forming as we speak. A recent international incident concerning copyrights irritated and disturbed me quite a bit . Even after thinking about it for days it just wouldn't go down, hence put up a blog post about the same . http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com/2008/09/16/scarcity-and-copyright/ One thing though, I'm no expert in copyright. While it may not serve the interests of the free software movement directly I do believe we get affected by it quite a bit. Hoping we can make our voices heard in as many places as we can. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal This email is licensed under http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ 065C 6D79 A68C E7EA 52B3 8D70 950D 53FB 729A 8B17

Software Freedom Day certainly isn't just about Free Software :) So far as I am concerned it is also about open standards, open knowledge and as you mention, open culture.

What do you propose we can do to better integrate the concepts of open culture into Software Freedom Day? Also, would you like your blog to be included in the SFD planet? True as well . <snipped> What do you propose we can do to better integrate the concepts of open

off-hand, it would be nice if SFD would be able to get the Nine-Inch Nails albums http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_inch_nails which are under CC . You could also get some poems and stories and put it either from archive.org or from gutenberg.net . There could also be a open/free culture hour where people can donate or put their art under either the Gnu FDL (reciprocity) or the slightly more complex CC licenses. There could also be a discussion by people in their events of what these licenses mean and which is good where and how.
Also, would you like your blog to be included in the SFD planet?
Pia, while I've no problems of the same, I do not know :- 1. The process that needs to be done 2. Would SFD gain anything from my blog appearing on the planet. 3. Silly but I haven't managed to get around to having a hackergochi .
Cheers, Pia

Just an addition to that . One could also have screenings of the big buck bunny (how could I have forgotten that) http://www.bigbuckbunny.org/index.php/download/ Also I know that OLPC had released lot of sound samples :- http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Sound_samples Another interesting one would be ccmixter http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CcMixter So as far as content is concerned, there is quite a bit which could be made use for awareness and re-mixing purposes. I really hope people do use these resources making SFD a whole richer experience for everyone concerned. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal This email is licensed under http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ 065C 6D79 A68C E7EA 52B3 8D70 950D 53FB 729A 8B17
