Hello, everyone. Last year there was a common issue that many speakers on SFD events were talking only about Linux and agitating to try some distribution and were not talking about OpenSource as an ideology: that it encourages people to share, that it is an effective model of code reusage and making standards. This will be good if presentation draft will be made with keynotes covering fundamental benefits of OpenSource to direct speaker in right direction. For speakers this will ease the preparation of talks. So possibly there will be more events held, because, i think, many of the enthusiasts are willing to give a talk, but don't know how to build their talk and are afraid to go to the public because of this. For SFD organizers this will help to be a bit more assured, that SFD is about freedom, not about trying Linux. I wish everyone endurance in SFD preparations. ;) Best regards. yaromir

Now I fully agree with you that SFD is not about GNU/Linux but about Software Freedom, and getting people to know about it and why it is important. We are currently working on providing a set of several presentations with comments to help SFD teams organizers and speakers with delivering content. I gave a talk early this year about "Why software freedom matters" which covers exactly those points. I am currently reviewing those slides with a few people to make sure nothing is left out.

Totally right: local events should encourage anyone regardless of the operating system to try and use Free Software. It is a lot easier to change the browser or email client you use than the whole operating system. This will also keep users of the Windows and OS X operating systems interested. Thank you very much for reinforcing that point. Fred ps: links to slides will be posted when available, but surely it will be linked from that page: http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/Resources

So good to hear that said.

<snip lots of good stuff> I wholeheartedly agree. We will be helping Windows and MacOS users to try out (more) Free Software on their computers. If you get them to use cross platform Free Software then when they do (hopefully) become ready to make the move to a Free Software OS then it will be a lot easier for them and be a natural progression to freedom. I would, from the start, still stress to them the importance of having a fully free software system. Regards, Mike.
