a couple of minor issues with the SFD Wiki's front page
I've just noticed a couple of issues with the Wiki's front page. The first of them is a typographical one: ASCII hyphens (-, U+002D) are used in place of proper em dashes (U+2014; cf. [1].) I've run a simplistic sed(1) substitution over the text, proofread it briefly, applied a couple more of manual fixes, and now MIME the result. The other issue is the mention of SFI where, I guess, DFI should've been mentioned. Thus I suggest the following change: -This SFD Wiki is organized by the Software Freedom International [[sfi|SFI]]. +This SFD Wiki is organized by the [[DFI|Digital Freedom International]] (DFI). Hi! Thanks for looking at this. I am personally at loss with the subtlelty of the difference and what problem it is causing. However the frontpage being only updatable by moderators and admins I can definitely add you to the former group if you're interested. For SFI vs DFI, actually both names are valid. I however agree that we should try to keep only one to avoid confusions. Thanks. Fred On 07/14/2012 02:56 AM, Ivan Shmakov wrote:

It simply goes against typographical conventions. Hyphens are used for line-wrapping and to form compound words (as in: “line-wrapping”), not in definitions, and the like (as in: “Lewis Carroll — the impartial narrator…”) Consider, e. g.: --cut: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyphen -- The hyphen (‐) is a punctuation mark used to join words and to separate syllables of a single word. The use of hyphens is called hyphenation. The hyphen should not be confused with dashes (‒, –, —, ―), which are longer and have different uses, or with the minus sign (−) which is also longer. […] --cut: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyphen -- (There is also an easy to understand explanation in [2], but only a version in Russian of that article currently exists.) For now, I'm interested in just this one single edit, and I feel it unjustified to grant me such privileges, unless temporarily. TIA.

ACK, thanks for the clarification. -- FSF associate member #7257 http://sf-day.org/
