I know it's a bit early but Hardware Freedom Day 2025 ( https://digitalfreedoms.org/en/hfd/blog ) is in April (about 6 months away). With all the recent hurricanes and power outages in the US, I thought it would be interesting to investigate Open Hardware options for dealing with off-the-grid emergency situations. So, I've started a list of Open Hardware and Free Software resources for emergency situations: https://codeberg.org/lmemsm/delightful-off-grid-open-tech Also have some discussion going on about it on Mastodon: https://fosstodon.org/@lmemsm/113306000552570651
If you have any suggestions to add to the list, please let me know. Thanks.
I suggest add: http://www.networkupstools.org NUT S/W to run your UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supplies, etc) I run mine on on FreeBSD, but it runs on all BSD & Linux etc) https://www.mapfactor.com/en/ Android, Apple iOS & MS etc https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mapfactor.navigator GPS app runs on pre downloaded maps, no need of net. See column 3 for which don't need data via SIM ID, billing, tracking: http://www.berklix.com/~jhs/android/maps.html Avoid Google eg map app & services, needing frequent net connection for them to purloin user data to feed ads. ( USA Gov. are long overdue to break up fined monopolist abuser Google http://www.berklix.com/search/#google Google block mail to @gmail @googlemail etc, until they extort unpaid admin time from sender sites to install SPF DKIM for google profit. ) Live net dependent services eg svn & git etc over ssh protocol etc, will be impacted by outages. Alternatives exist needing just intermittent SMTP, eg its still possible to receive FreeBSD source code repository updates by email http://ctm.berklix.org If Linux people want to adopt CTM code too, welcome its public.
