Perhaps we should look to the Pirate Party for advice?
They got 7% of the vote in Sweden :)

Exactly my point; the pirate party oppose strong copyright, copyright extensions, DRM, and laws such as the DMCA. Most Free software supporters would agree with this.

They are also against patents, particularly pharmaceutical, business method and software patents, but they'd like to abolish all patents and make a sound argument for doing so.

They also support greater privacy and less surveillance.

There's nothing there that I disagree with.
