An extremely light distribution that is being tested to be approved
as the tenth free software GNU distro by the Free Software Foundation
which is recommended for machines with 64MB RAM or more is Connochaetos. It
comes in its version
for 486 CPUs or better. It can be valuable to demonstrate that
it is possible to have a modern GNU operating system with with
nothing but free (as in freedom) software.
If you are a little more knowledgeable on the subject, you can
install Parabola. It is
a distro of the GNU operating system which is totally configurable
because it installs nothing that you have not commanded to be
installed. (Not even the graphic user interface.) It is a distro
that comes with packages almost as new as if you were to compile
them yourself from the developers' latest source code. So, if you
like to hack, use it and advocate it for its philosophical as well
as technical freedom! If you are going to install it on SFD,
practice beforehand so you do not have probles on Saturday.
If you want a free distro that works with at least 512MB on RAM and
has an interface similar to Windowz, use Trisquel. It
comes for 64
bits and 32
bits. Try Triskel
for 32 bits or for 64
bits if you want a really nice interface (KDE).
Distribute
free (as in freedom) software and caution
others about software that is non-free. ¡Be free!
and you will notice that the future of society will be better when
you start on your own stuff. Software Freedom Day is about freedom.
So make your best to help people know that it is the freedom that
matters by using only free software.
Keep on hacking...society!
