## Software Freedom Day

Software Freedom Day is an annual event to celebrate software
freedom and the people behind it around the world. It is also an
event to teach people about the importance of software freedom and
to encourage them to adopt it.

This year, it will take place on the 18th of September, and we urge
you to participate in or organize an event in your local area to
celebrate it.

## Women's Caucus internship opportunity

The Women's Caucus is seeking an intern to assist with its work to
increase the number of women involved in free software. This is a
12-week position for the fall, with some flexibility on the start and
end times.

## LibrePlanet 2010 audio and video is now ready

Our summer campaigns intern, Steve DuBois, has been working on
preparing the video and audio recordings of the annual software
freedom activism conference, LibrePlanet.

All recordings are available in Ogg format and are free to share.

## ACTA petition delivered with over 4,000 signatures

The FSF delivered its petition against ACTA to trade representatives
from the US and other countries as they met in Washington D.C.

ACTA is a proposed international agreement to punish Internet users
who share and to enforce corporations' interests on them at the
expense of the public's freedom.

## Help us stamp out DRM in education

The FSF's anti-DRM campaign, Defective By Design, is preparing a list
of schools that require or offer DRM-laden hardware, such as the
iPod, iPhone, iPad or Amazon Kindle (or any other device).

You can help by identifying these schools.

## Apple's latest DRM patent

Apple has applied for a software patent on a spying technology that
will give them unlimited control over people's devices and the ability
to use them for massive surveillance.

* <http://www.defectivebydesign.org/blog/1313>

## USPTO is seeking comment on the Bilski decision

The United States Patent and Trademark Office is accepting comments
until 27 September 2010 on their proposed examiner guidelines for
interpreting the Supreme Court's recent Bilski decision.

The End Software Patent campaign is asking for help in analyzing some
documents to highlight the points that need to be included in its
comment.

To get announcements of most new GNU packages, subscribe to the info-gnu
mailing list: <http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/info-gnu>.  Nearly
all GNU software is available from <http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/>, or
preferably one of its mirrors (<http://www.gnu.org/prep/ftp.html>).  You
can use the url <http://ftpmirror.gnu.org/> to be automatically
redirected to a (hopefully) nearby and up-to-date mirror.

This month we welcome Jose Marchesi as maintainer of the new package
recutils, Mike Gran as maintainer of the new package guile-ncurses, and
long-time maintainers Bruno Haible, Jim Meyering, and Simon Josefsson
adding the new package vc-changelog to their duties.

Several GNU packages are looking for maintainers and other assistance.
Please see <http://www.gnu.org/server/takeaction.html#unmaint> if you'd
like to help.  The general page on how to help GNU is at
<http://www.gnu.org/help/help.html>.  To submit new packages to GNU, see
<http://www.gnu.org/help/evaluation.html>.

As always, please feel free to write to me, <karl@gnu.org>, with any
GNUish questions or suggestions for future installments.

### Take action with the FSF

Contributions from thousands of individual members enable the FSF's
work. You can contribute by joining at <http://www.fsf.org/join>. If
you're already a member, you can help refer new members (and earn
some rewards) by adding a line with your member number to your email
signature like:

I'm an FSF member -- Help us support software freedom!
 <http://www.fsf.org/jf?referrer=2442>

The FSF is also always looking for volunteers
(<http://www.fsf.org/volunteer>). From rabble-rousing to hacking,
from issue coordination to envelope stuffing -- there's something
here for everybody to do. Also, head over to our campaign section
(<http://www.fsf.org/campaigns>) and take action on software patents,
DRM, free software adoption, OpenDocument, RIAA and more.
