We are looking at using Dillo as a help browser. Unfortunately we are having a lot of problems. Currently we cannot display any pages with images in as Dillo crashes. this happens on both HP-UX and Solaris (I have submitted a bug entry about it).

Dillo works OK on Solaris (BTW: I tested it myself yesterday!) And as the compatibility list shows, it has been reported to work too... This may be something with your system...

One thing that would be very useful is to put a dependencies page on your website. We are building using jpeg-6b, libpng-1.0.12, zlib-1.1.3,libgtk-1.2, libgdk-1.2, libgmodule-1.2, and libglib-1.2 all of which we built ourselves. A dependencies page could display a list of such libraries. If there are known problems associated with using particular versions of the dependency libraries that could be displayed too.

Just go to Debian's page for the dillo package. There you'll find the list (look from our download page).

While I was writing this, one of my co-workers has discovered that Dillo crashes because the HP-UX XServer display defaults to 8 bits. Changing it to 20 bits or whatever solves the problem. However this may not be a satisfactory solution for us.

I've run Dillo on 8bits display lots of times (in a Sparc Linux the first time). We've also tuned it to work over VNC (also with a low color resolution), and it works OK in linux with: 'startx -- -depth 8' so I think it may be another problem. Maybe the compiler or the GTK libraries (check the README file, Solaris section). Or try to run gqview or other GTK apps. to see what happens.

There are other problems getting Dillo to run on HP-UX, and I would be glad to share my experience and fixes with you if you want.

Maybe it's a 64bit machine and sometimes we've had problems with those. Fortunately today I'll work on a 64bit Solaris station trying to nail down the problems. In brief: try to run Dillo on another platform (GNU/Linux for instance) with 8bpp and see it works! Then you can try to find what's the problem with your station (as suggested above). in the mean time I'll be working out on the 64bit Solaris station.
