It would certainly be nice if Dillo accepted UTF-8 encoding of ISO-8859-1, but at present this is not the case.
Matthias is right. Our idea is to switch Dillo to FLTK and then to handle strings in UTF8, the other encodings can be converted to it. FLTK is not as far as it seems. After dillo-0.8.3 is released, Sebastian will merge the new Dw abstraction layer. We also have a testbed to test Dw over another widget set (in this case FLTK). Once the Dw testbed works over FLTK, the next step is to do the same with the Dw inside Dillo, and finally to port Dillo's GUI to FLTK (a simple task because our GUI is no rocket science).
